AS-OCT and Ocular Hygrometer as Innovative Tools in Dry Eye Disease Diagnosis

Abstract: Dry eye disease (DED) is one of the conditions that most commonly leads patients to visit an ophthalmologist. Fast and accurate diagnosis relieves patient discomfort and spares them from long-term effects on the ocular surface. Many tests used in the diagnosis of DED may be considered subjective as they rely on an experienced observer for image interpretation, resulting in variations in diagnosis. On one hand, the non-contact nature of the anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) device and its r… Show more

“…Using DEvice©, patients with DED showed statistically significant higher values of RH compared to the control group. These results were consistent with data reported in a small observational pilot study, in which this tool was utilized to measure the fluctuation in relative humidity by analyzing the curvature shape, the speed of changes, and the ultimate RH after one minute [20]. Conversely, no statistically significant differences were detected for the mean values of temperature between the two groups.…”

“…Thirty minutes after the Keratograph assessment, all patients and controls were examined by means of DEvice© (AI, Rome, Italy), which allowed the measurement of RH and temperature in a closed microenvironment around the ocular surface. Technical details of the instrument along with its modality of use have been previously described [ 20 ]. Briefly, the DEvice© was positioned by the operator on the orbital margins of the patient, who was asked to avoid blinking during the assessment period ( Figure 1 ).…”

“…Measuring the tear water evaporation rate at the time of diagnosis and during the course of the disease makes it possible to monitor the risk of a worsening ocular surface system, suggest an appropriate therapeutic approach, and check the efficacy of the chosen treatment [ 100 , 101 ].…”

“…To overcome these issues, recent non-invasive devices have been developed to measure various novel diagnostic parameters, such as non-invasive break-up time, tear meniscus height, infrared meibography, aberrometry, tear film interferometry, humidity, temperature and corneal nerves metrics [5][6][7][8][9][10]. All-in-one integrate devices combining multiple tests to obtain a comprehensive ocular surface evaluation are now available.…”
