Asbestos related diseases from environmental exposure to crocidolite in Da-yao, China. I. Review of exposure and epidemiological data

Abstract: Background: Scattered patches of crocidolite, one form of asbestos, were found in the surface soil in the rural county of Da-yao in southwestern China. In 1983, researchers from the West China University of Medical Sciences (WCUMS) discovered that residents of two villages in Da-yao had hyperendemic pleural plaques and excessive numbers of pleural mesotheliomas. Aims: To review and summarise epidemiological studies, along with other relevant data, and to discuss the potential contribution to environmental risk… Show more

“…A relationship between environmental exposure to NOA and MM has been detected in Greece [7], New Caledonia [8], China [9], and Italy [10], but no research has studied the association between residential distance from environmental (non-occupational) asbestos and mesothelioma risk [11].…”

“…The concentrations of total particles and asbestos fibers in air samples collected near an asbestos crusher house were investigated in 1984 (Luo et al, 2003). The mean and the maximum concentrations of airborne asbestos fibers < 2 m from the asbestos crusher house estimated with PCM were 6.6 and 25.4 f/mL, respectively.…”

“…According to a survey in 1984, the asbestos mineral was usually used to produce stoves, construct houses, pave roads, and paint walls (Luo et al, 2003). As shown in Table 1, 30% of local families produced asbestos stoves using the blue clay.…”

“…The 34 cases arose over 16 years; about two non-occupational cases per year. The population of three villages of Da-yao with about 20% of the total ground surface covered by crocidolite ore has been about 68 000 and all residents are assumed to have been exposed (Luo et al, 2003). Additionally, the fibre was used in family-style production to manufacture asbestos products such as stoves, until banned in 1984.…”
