Aseptic Loosening after THA and TKA - Do gender, tobacco use and BMI have an impact on implant survival time?

Abstract: Aseptic loosening (AL) has been reported to be one of the most frequent complications in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) and Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA). The aim of this study was to identify the effects of gender, current tobacco use and BMI on the incidence of AL and implant survival time in THA and TKA. Methods: Between July 2012 and December 2016 all patients that were diagnosed with an AL of a primary THA or primary TKA and underwent revision surgery at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed fo… Show more

“…When conservative treatment fails, TKA is one of the most commonly used surgical options for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis [29]. Despite the aforementioned differences in anatomy and osteoarthritis, clinical outcome and long-term prosthesis failure rates do not differ after primary TKA [30][31][32]. After revision arthroplasty, prosthesis failure rates have been shown to be significantly increased [9,10].…”

“…Moreover, the presence of endotoxin can also affect these cellular responses and activities ( 30 – 32 ). From the aspects of the disease host, patient-related risk factors, such as age, sex, obesity, smoking, and genetic variation, also play a role in AL pathogenesis ( 33 – 38 ). However, comorbidities affect the occurrence of AL even larger.…”
