Aspect and tense attrition in Russian-German bilingual speakers

Abstract: Purpose: The impact of second language (L2) on first language (L1), known as L2 transfer, has been suggested as a fundamental driving force of L1 attrition. The goal of this study was to test the differential attrition of verb aspect and tense in L1 (Russian) under the influence of L2 (German) grammatical properties. We also investigated whether the age of bilingualism onset and the amount of exposure to L1 modulate this L2 transfer effect. Methodology: We tested sentence processing in 30 adult Russian monolin… Show more

“…In contrast, storytelling, discourse, and conversation are characterized by expressive variations of fluency. This aspect of fluency cannot be tested using picture description tasks but requires a computational analysis of voice quality and speech fluency in free style conversations and in other conditions affecting language, such as stroke aphasia and primary progressive aphasia [e.g., 58,59,[60][61][62][63][64]. Another limitation is the relatively small sample size; a larger sample size is expected to increase the effect size of the model.…”

“…We finally included 14 studies with 14 independent group comparisons and 81 effect sizes for the meta-analysis calculations. Two studies ( Castro et al, 2017 ; Dragoy et al, 2019 ) were excluded from the meta-analysis because they did not provide the needed statistics to calculate SMD.…”

“…The study of tense and aspect systems has been of interest to researchers for many years. Different scholars have addressed the two notions from a variety of perspectives (e.g., Comrie, 1976;Dragoy, Virfel, Yurchenko & Bastiaanse, 2019;González & Hernández, 2018;Izquierdo & Kihlstedt, 2019;Kanwit, 2017;Smith;1997). Since tense and aspect are two intertwined notions, a discussion of tense is appropriate when any discussion of aspect is attempted.…”
