Aspects of permian palaeobotany and palynology. III. A new reconstruction of Lilpopia raciborskii (Lilpop) conert et schaarschmidt (Sphenopsida)

Abstract: The Early Permian plant Lilpopia raciborskii (Sphenopsida) has been found for the first time outside its type region, the Karniowice area (Poland). On the basis of this new material, collected in the "Waderner Gruppe" of Sobernheim (Nahe area, German Federal Republic), L. raciborskii is described and discussed in the light of previous concepts of this species; a new and more complete reconstruction of the taxon is presented. For the first time epidermal features are described. The heterophyllous leaves of L. r… Show more

“…The taxon would thus be clearly different from S. miravallis. Kerp (1981Kerp ( , 1984, emphasizing among other characters the relative thinness of the lateral veins, considers Sterzel's specimens to belong to Lilpopia raciborskii (Lilpop) Conert et Schaarschmidt, which shows this feature as well. “…Given the intraspecific variation in Sphenophyllum leaves, identifying isolated leaves often must be tentative. Possibilities include Sphenophyllum verticillatum and Lilpopia raciborskii (see comparisons in Kerp, 1984;Wagner, 1985;Barthel, 2009).…”

“…Tristachya ) is a sphenophyllalean taxon (Taylor & Taylor, 1993: 315). Although this plant possesses sporangia below a leaf [ sensu the reconstruction presented by Kerp (1984)], it differs from Rotafolia in that the fertile region is situated between the upper and lower vegetative leaves, the sporophylls lack distal or lateral divisions and the tiny ovoid sporangia are arranged in clusters.…”
