AbstractEleven paleogeographic maps and a summary ice retreat map outline the history of advance, retreat, and readvances of the Laurentide Ice Sheet along with associated changes in proglacial drainage and relative sea level oscillations for Late Wisconsinan and Holocene times. The text outlines pertinent chronological control and discusses the paleoglaciology of the ice sheet, with attention to location and migration of ice divides, their attendant domes and saddles, and to ice streams, ice shelves, and mechanisms of déglaciation. At 18 ka the ice sheet consisted of 3 sectors with an interlocked system of ice divides joined at intersector saddles. A throughgoing superdivide is recognized and named the Trans Laurentide Ice Divide. The ice sheet retreated slowly from 18 to 13 ka, mainly along the west and south margins, but still held a near maximum configuration at 13 ka. A regional change in flow pattern over the Prairies just before 14 ka is thought to represent a large reduction in ice volume, but not in extent, and likely was triggered by a switch from nondeforming to deforming bed conditions. Retreat between 13 and 8 ka was vastly more rapid in the west than in the east, which resulted in eastward migration of the divide system of Keewatin Ice but relatively static divides of Labrador and Foxe Ice. By 10 ka the Trans Laurentide Ice Divide had been fragmented as Hudson Ice became increasingly autonomous. By 8 ka Hudson Ice had disappeared, little ice was left in Keewatin, but Foxe Ice still held its near maximum configuration and Labrador Ice was still larger than Foxe Ice. Repeated surging along aquatic margins and calving back of margins thinned by surging probably was the most important mechanism of deglaciation of Keewatin and Hudson Ice. The core of Foxe Ice disintegrated at 7 ka but retreat and readvance of Foxe Ice remnants continued throughout the Holocene.

Coastal sections in the Thule area, northwest Greenland, provide a record of last interglacial glacial and océanographie events on the northern perimeter of Baffin Bay. The record is dated by a combination of thermoluminescence and 14C dating; local and regional correlation is provided by amino acid analyses of mollusc shells, and periods of penetration by warm subarctic water have been identified by their foraminifera and mollusc faunas. Subarctic water reached the area on three occasions : during the Holocene, and in the Early and Late Sangamonian. Maximum, although restricted, ice coverage for the last interglacial/glacial cycle was attained during Middle Sangamonian times, and a smaller advance took place in the Late Wisconsinan. In between ice coverage was similar to the present, or smaller. The record provides a link between events in Arctic Canada and northern Greenland, and shows that in this large region there was a causal relationship between océanographie change and glaciation.Certaines coupes le long de la côte de la région de Thulé fournissent des données sur la glaciation et sur l'océanographie de la partie nord de la mer de Baffin au cours du dernier interglaciaire. Les événements ont été datées grâce à la combinaison des âges obtenus par thermoluminescence et par le 14C; les corrélations locales et régionales ont été établies par l'analyse des acides aminés à partir des coquillages de mollusques; les périodes où les eaux chaudes subarctiques ont pénétré dans la région ont été identifiées grâce aux faunes des foraminifères et des mollusques. Entre les deux événements, la couverture glaciaire était semblable à celle d'aujourd'hui ou moindre. Abrupt changes (Heinrich events) in late Quaternary North Atlantic marine environments: a history and review of data and concepts

In the last several years evidence has mounted that a series of abrupt changes in sediment delivery and palaeoceanography effected the North Atlantic; they are recorded in a variety of proxy records but most dramatically in changes of grain-size and mineralogy associated with postulated iceberg rafting events, specifically Heinrich (H) events. This review paper examines the evidence for such evidence prior to the development of the 'Heinrich event ' concept (1988-1992), and then examines the explosion of data and correlations that stemmed from the acceptance and use of this paradigm. Specific attention is focused on ideas pertaining to the cause(s) of glaciological mechanisms, sediment delivery, and sediment source, and major gaps in our understanding of the underlying glaciological, glacial geological, and glacial marine processes are stressed. Abrupt changes across boundaries associated with H-2 in the Labrador Sea are illustrated from core HU87033-009LCF. The case is made that correlations between records need to be more rigorous, especially within the range of radiocarbon dating, but it appears that abrupt changes in the delivery of iceberg rafted debris, which characterize these intervals, are multisourced. It is unclear how global 'climate' can simultaneously influence the abrupt behaviour of ice margins in different parts of the world-for marine-based margins, changes in relative sea-level are one possibility. A qualitative model is presented for triggering H events, which includes global changes in mass balance, changes in relative sea-level at ice margins due to glacial isostasy, and changes in the basal thermal regime of tidewater icestreams.
