Asphaltene aggregation onset during high-salinity waterflooding of reservoirs (a molecular dynamic study)

Abstract: The primary objective of this study is to establish an understanding of the role of high-salinity brine on the intensity of asphaltene aggregation onset during waterflooding of petroleum reservoirs. We already have shown that asphaltenes have a high tendency to form aggregates during waterflooding process when pure-and low salinity-water are injected into reservoirs. To fulfill the present objective, molecular dynamic simulations are per-formed on asphaltenic-oil/aqueous systems at 550 K-200 bar. The oil phase… Show more

“…MD has been successfully employed to model asphaltene precipitation , and asphaltene deposition on calcite and silica. , Also, MD is able to model the interfacial properties in the presence of different substances such as asphaltene, , asphaltene and resin, emulsifier, and demulsifier of water/oil emulsion . MD has been used to estimate the solubility parameter for asphaltenes in different solvents, , diffusion coefficients, ,,, and hydrate stability and dissociation. Recently, the MD approach has been used to model asphaltene aggregation during enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes such as water injection and gas injection . The focus of the current study is on the inhibition of asphaltene aggregation.…”

“…Yaseen and Mansoori , and Jian et al discussed their simulation results regarding the asphaltene aggregation in a brine solution. They pointed out a moderate decrease in asphaltene aggregation in the brine–ortho-xylene and brine–toluene systems.…”

“…Additionally, they reported another asphaltene model in water (without a high density of heteroatoms and aliphatic chains), which led to aggregation. In another simulation study, Yaseen and Mansoori examined the asphaltene stability and onset in high salinity (250,000 ppm) water flooding at 277 °C and 2900 psi. The results illustrated that salt (35,000 ppm) affected the asphaltene molecules, and onset decreased compared to a system without salt.…”

“…It is noticed that the hydrophobic interactions are enhanced at low salt concentrations facilitating aggregation, while such kinds of interactions are suppressed at higher salt concentrations, thereby hindering aggregation. Yaseen and Mansoori 28 investigated the asphaltene aggregation because of the water-flooding using MD simulations. In their study, seven different asphaltene water models were probed.…”
