This study investigates the synthesis of mesophase pitch using low-cost fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) slurry and waste fluid asphaltene (WFA) as raw materials through the co-carbonization method. The resulting mesophase pitch product and its formation mechanism were thoroughly analyzed. Various characterization techniques, including polarizing microscopy, softening point measurement, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were employed to characterize and analyze the properties and structure of the mesophase pitch. The experimental results demonstrate that the optimal optical texture of the mesophase product is achieved under specific reaction conditions, including a temperature of 420 °C, pressure of 1 MPa, reaction time of 6 h, and the addition of 2% asphaltene. It was observed that a small amount of asphaltene contributes to the formation of mesophase pitch spheres, facilitating the development of the mesophase. However, excessive content of asphaltene may cover the surface of the mesophase spheres, impeding the contact between them and consequently compromising the optical texture of the mesophase pitch product. Furthermore, the inclusion of asphaltene promotes polymerization reactions in the system, leading to an increase in the average molecular weight of the mesophase pitch. Notably, when the amount of asphaltene added is 2%, the mesophase pitch demonstrates the lowest ID/IG value, indicating superior molecular orientation and larger graphite-like microcrystals. Additionally, researchers found that at this asphaltene concentration, the mesophase pitch exhibits the highest degree of order, as evidenced by the maximum diffraction angle (2θ) and stacking height (Lc) values, and the minimum d002 value. Moreover, the addition of asphaltene enhances the yield and aromaticity of the mesophase pitch and significantly improves the thermal stability of the resulting product.

Asphaltene may destabilize during the oil recovery, transportation, and processing and cause significant flow assurance problems that negatively affect the operational expenditures (OPEX). Modeling investigation of asphaltene precipitation and consequently deposition is a vital research component in flow assurance requiring the accurate description of the phenomena under various operational conditions. The structure of asphaltene molecules and the presence of heteroatoms play a significant role in the intermolecular forces and the mechanism of asphaltene aggregation. Nevertheless, the intermolecular forces, e.g., polar forces, and their addition to thermodynamic modeling of asphaltene phase behavior still need investigation. While the traditional equation of state (EoS), e.g., cubic EoS, does not provide any special treatment to polar energy, the π-π interaction and polar effect can be mapped into the EoS using a separate polar term. In this research, we use cubic EoS, cubic plus polar (CPP) EoS, and molecular dynamics (MD) (three different modeling approaches) to analyze the effect of asphaltene structure and operational conditions on the precipitation phenomenon. Comparing the error associated with correlation and prediction results of the models, we show that the CPP approach using optimization to tune parameters of the EoS is the most reliable approach, followed by CPP EoS using MD to find dipole moment for the aryl-linked core asphaltene structure. The CPP EoS and MD optimizing island structure for asphaltene is the third-best model, and SRK EoS is a less efficient approach. Considering the values for dipole moment and molecular weight of asphaltene, along with correlation and prediction ability of the techniques, it is revealed that polar forces can be considered in a separate term in addition to van der Waals force to increase the model efficiency. Moreover, the aryl structure with a 750 g/mol molecular weight and one/two thiophene/pyridine group is the most proper asphaltene structure.

Report on the Activity of SPE Distinguished Lecturer(2021 -22) Hideharu YonebayashiAbstract： The society of petroleum engineers (SPE) , established in 1957 and the worldʼs largest academic society in the E&P industry, launched the distinguished lecturer (DL) program in 1961. Annually in recent 3 decades, around 30 DLs selected from all over the world provide special lectures to local section members. The author was selected as the rst Japanese national DL in the programʼs 60-year history. In the year 2021-22, total 3 lecture tours were held as 2 virtual and 1 in-person programs due to the COVID-19 situation. The report summarizes the overview of SPE DL program and the authorʼs experience of DL activities.
