“…Treatment with acetylsalicylic acid produces an increase in plasma concentrations of IRI and IRG as well as a fall in BG concentrations in normal and diabetic men (2). The stimulatory action of acetylsalicylic acid has been desribed for the first phase of insulin secretion in response to iv administration of glucose (2, 4) and for arginine-induced insulin release in normal man (4).…”

“…Thus, a modification of the secretion of insulin and glucagon after the administration of acetylsalicylic acid (2) and the well known hypoglycemic effect of salicylates (3) have been attributed to the suppression of endogenous prostaglandin synthesis. As other actions of salicylates may also be responsible for these phenomena (2,4), it was of interest to investigate the arginine-induced secretion of insulin and glucagon after pretreatment with indomethacin, yet another inhibitor of the endogenous prostaglandin synthesis (5). Since a direct action of prostaglandins on the secretion of pituitary hormones is also a matter of controversy (6) we have also studied the effect of indomethacin upon the arginineinduced secretion of GH and PRL.…”

“…Thus, the reduction of cataract formation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes receiving aspirin may have resulted from the hypoglycemic effects of this drug (18,20,22). Aspirin stimulates insulin secretion following glucose loads in normal humans and in diabetics (22). In diabetic rats salicylic acid lowers plasma glucose levels by 57.8% in 5 hrs (8).…”

“…S ODIUM salicylate and acetylsalicylate have been reported to enhance glucose-induced insulin secretion in vitro and in vivo (2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). Salicylates were proposed to exert their effects on pancreatic islet cells by inhibiting prostaglandin (PG) synthesis.…”
