Bacillus species are gram-positive, aerobic, peritrically flagellated and endospore-forming bacteria. They can be found everywhere in the environment, especially in soil (its common habitat), water, dust or in the air. Probiotics, which have beneficial health effects, constitute an important group of Bacillus species. This study aimed to isolate Bacillus from various sources, identify it molecularly and determine its probiotic properties.For this purpose, eight Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus clausii strains among 58 isolates from fish intestine, soil, ripened cheese and commercial probiotic supplements were identified and their probiotic properties were characterized. Firstly, Bacillus strains were molecularly identified by 16S rRNA PCR analysis. The growth of Bacillus isolates at various temperatures, salt concentrations, and pH levels, as well as tests for esculin hydrolysis, starch hydrolysis, nitrate reduction, and gas generation from glucose, were all investigated to assess the isolates' physiological and biochemical characteristics. In terms of probiotic potential of Bacillus isolates; tolerance of bile salt, cell surface hydrophobicity, auto aggregation, antibiotic susceptibility tests were conducted. In all analyses, strains obtained from food supplements showed high levels of hydrophobicity and auto-aggregation properties, and the highest values following these strains were observed in Bacillus subtilis strains (F1 and S2) isolated from fish intestines and soil, respectively. All strains showed strong growth features in bile salt conditions. It has been determined that antibiotic sensitivity varies depending on the strain. Overall, high sensitivity to tetracycline has been observed. In summary, this study revealed the potential probiotic properties of Bacillus isolates obtained from different sources. The study also compared these probiotic properties with probiotic Bacillus strains isolated from food supplements.

Clarisia racemosa is a valuable resource in the wood industry, commonly used as raw material for furniture, boat construction, civil engineering, and various other applications. However, this species is used in other sectors as well. Research has shown that this plant has therapeutic potential for medicinal purposes. This review aims to present the various biological activities of the Clarisia racemosa plant. This study was conducted by postgraduate students in the Morphotechnology program at the Federal University of Pernambuco, from September 1st to October 6th, 2023, as part of a course on scientific article and patent preparation. The research findings confirmed that the species has the ability to promote various beneficial activities, including antioxidant, antitumor, toxicological, insecticidal, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and photoprotective effects. This review aims to increase the value of species found in the Brazilian flora by obtaining products with high added value.

This study represents an advancement in the field of composite material engineering, focusing on the synthesis of composite materials derived from porous hydroxyapatite via surface modification employing cucurbit[n]urils, which are highly promising macrocyclic compounds. The surface modification procedure entailed the application of cucurbit[n]urils in an aqueous medium onto the hydroxyapatite surface. A comprehensive characterization of the resulting materials was undertaken, employing analytical techniques including infrared (IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Subsequently, the materials were subjected to rigorous evaluation for their hemolytic effect, anti-inflammatory properties, and cytotoxicity. Remarkably, the findings revealed a notable absence of typical hemolytic effects in materials incorporating surface-bound cucurbit[n]urils. This observation underscores the potential of these modified materials as biocompatible alternatives. Notably, this discovery presents a promising avenue for the fabrication of resilient and efficient biocomposites, offering a viable alternative to conventional approaches. Furthermore, these findings hint at the prospect of employing supramolecular strategies involving encapsulated cucurbit[n]urils in analogous processes. This suggests a novel direction for further research, potentially unlocking new frontiers in material engineering through the exploitation of supramolecular interactions.
