Assembly of Fullerene Nanoparticles Using a Liquid–Liquid Interface

Abstract: Fullerene (C 60 ) nanoparticles were assembled in two-dimension using a liquid-liquid interface. C 60 nanoparticles dispersed in ethyl lactate=water solution were added to a glass vessel. Then, hexane was added to the dispersion solution to create the liquidliquid interface. C 60 nanocrystals were assembled at the interface, when ethanol was added to the water dispersion-hexane solution. The assembled film was transferred onto a solid substrate and the film morphology was observed by a scanning electron micros… Show more

“…Some attempts were made by sacricial templating, 27 electrodeposition from colloids, 28,29 or self-assembly of synthesized C 60 nanoparticles. 30 These methods remain limited by the difficulty to prepare C 60 nanoparticles smaller than 100 nm in diameter. [30][31][32] Interfacial self-assembly has emerged as a promising method for the fabrication of free-oating lms that can be readily integrated into functional devices.…”

“…To the C 60 nanocrystals dispersion, n-hexane was added to form an interface. Addition of ethanol to the interface, the C 60 nanocrystals were assembled at the n-hexane/water interface [10]. However density of the prepared film is low and their surface is relatively rough.…”

“…We have applied a liquid-liquid interface assembling technique to fabricate uniform thin films composed of organic nanocrystals [10][11][12]. Ultrathin film of nanocrystals with different size and shape has been prepared using the assembling technique.…”

“…Hence, researchers have concentrated on bottom-up assembly methods instead. Fullerenes and their derivatives have been self-assembled in a wealth of building blocks, such as block copolymer assemblies, nanotubes, lamellae, monolayers, vesicles, single crystals, , or nanoparticles. , An appealing method to obtain nanoporous films would be by self-assembly of fullerene nanoparticles . The bottleneck to the direct use of fullerene nanoparticles to form nanoporous films is the reproducible production of monodisperse nanoparticles with diameters below 100 nm. ,, …”
