Assesment of Knowledge and Attidudes of Patients with Epilepsy and Health Professionals About Epilepsy Disease

Abstract

SummaryObjectives: Today, management of epilepsy treatment is still a major problem. The level of knowledge of epilepsy is important within health care providers and patients with epilepsy. In this study we aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge and attitudes towards the disease. Methods: A face to face questionnaire (consisted 9 questions) was applicated to 61 patients with epilepsy by a neurologist. Patients included were ones who applied to the neurology out-patient clinic during September 2010 and January 2011. Questioned 91 health care professionals were medical doctors, nurses, medical technicians and medical officers. Results: We found that the ratio of wrong answers in patient-questionaire was significantly higher than of medical professionals. Level of education versus ratio of wrong answers among patients with epilepsy and medical professionals also revealed an inverse significant correlation. Conclusion:Results of the present study showed that knowledge of medical professionals about epilepsy was better than of the patient group. Although this difference is not a totally unexpected finding, results also favored the need for amelioration of regular education programs for the management of epilepsy, not only for patients but also the health professionals.Key words: Knowledge; education; epilepsy; myth; medical professionals. ÖzetAmaç: Epilepsi hastalık tedavisinin yönetilmesi günümüzde halen önemli bir sorundur. Sağlık personeli ve epilepsi hastalarının epilepsi hakkındaki bilgi düzeyleri önemlidir. Biz çalışmamızda bu bilgi düzeylerini ve hastalığa karşı tutumları değerlendirmeyi amaçladık. Gereç ve Yöntem:Eylül 2010 -Ocak 2011 tarihleri arasında nöroloji polikliniğine ardı sıra başvuran 61 epilepsi hastası ve 91 sağlık personeline (doktor, hemşire, sağlık teknisyeni ve sağlık memuru) nöroloji uzmanı tarafından yüz yüze dokuz soruluk anket uygulandı. Bulgular:Epilepsi hastalarının anket sorularına yanlış cevap verme oranını sağlık personeline oranla istatistiksel olarak daha yüksek bulduk. Epilepsi hastaları ile sağlık personeli arasında eğitim süreleri, yanlış yanıt oranları arasındaki farklılık istatistiksel olarak anlamlıydı. Yanlış cevap verme eğitim süresi ile ters bir ilişkiyi içermekteydi.Sonuç: Sağlık personelinin epilepsi hastalığı hakkında bilgi düzeyi epilepsi hastalarından genel olarak daha iyidir. Ancak, epilepsi tedavisini ele alışta daha iyi bir yaklaşım sağlamak için her iki gruba ve topluma düzenli eğitim programları uygulanmalıdır.
