Assessing Biosecurity Compliance in Poultry Farms: A Survey in a Densely Populated Poultry Area in North East Italy

Abstract: Biosecurity in poultry farms represents the first line of defense against the entry and spread of pathogens that may have animal health, food safety, and economic consequences. The aim of this study was to assess biosecurity compliance in poultry farms located in a densely populated poultry area in North East Italy. A total of 259 poultry farms (i.e., broilers, turkeys, and layers) were surveyed between 2018 and 2019 using standardized checklists, and differences in biosecurity compliance between the poultry s… Show more

“…Biosecurity in poultry farms is the first line of defense for preventing the entry and spread of infectious pathogens, which may greatly impact poultry health, food safety, and economic stability ( 55 ). In our study, the emergence and spread of AIV in turkey farms might be attributed to inadequate biosecurity and hygienic measures in the farms.…”

“…Another limitation to the study was the difficulty of assessing with precision, for each database and then for each region or country, the percentage of poultry farms included. On the one hand, the coverage for research-associated databases was low ( 23 , 24 ) for both practical reasons and because they did not necessarily require high coverage. In databases fed by auto-evaluation tools, the number of farms covered also can vary greatly depending on participants’ willingness to use the tools and whether the tools are user-friendly ( 25 ).…”

“…Additionally, implement stringent biosecurity measures to avoid disease introduction and spread in the poultry farm. This specifically entails limiting access to the poultry farm, outfitting employees in proper clothing and footwear, and putting in hygienic procedures including hand washing and disinfecting tools and transportation [ 26 ]. Facility cleaning and disinfection, appropriate ventilation, and the use of clean water are some effective means of maintaining litter conditions that reduce oocyst sporulation.…”
