Assessing cardiovascular risk in Mediterranean women with polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: We have found that in Mediterranean PCOS the prevalence of MS is relatively low while elevated LDL-cholesterol levels are more prevalent. Therefore, beyond MS, a more comprehensive lipid evaluation, including LDL-cholesterol, is needed for a more effective assessment of cardiovascular risk in PCOS.

“…However, the higher prevalence of decreased HDL-cholesterol with a similar rate of elevated TG, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol observed in this study may indicate the effects of insulin resistance on HDLcholesterol. Further, this finding would be an indirect reflection of increased ovarian androgen secretion in women with PCOS, as proposed in previous reports (40,41).…”

“…Dyslipidemia is present in 8%-70% of women with PCOS (1,4,29), with the risk increasing with age in one longitudinal study (30). Dyslipidemia (abnormalities of at least one lipid parameter) has been reported in roughly 20%-35% of the general US population in two large cross-sectional studies conducted by the CDC and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (6,31).…”

“…Dyslipidemia is common in PCOS and is present in up to 70% of subjects (2,59). An atherogenic lipid profile has been described that is not consistent between studies but may include high LDL and triglyceride levels, altered LDL quality, and a low HDL level consistent with increased CVR.…”
