Assessing Cephalopods Fisheries in the Strait of Sicily by Using Poor Data Modeling

Abstract: Cephalopods, including octopuses, squids, and cuttlefishes, are exploited by both bottom trawl and small-scale fisheries (SSF) in most of the Mediterranean areas. Bottom trawl fisheries regard cephalopods as a valuable bycatch, whereas for SSF, they are among the main target species. Cephalopods account for a relatively small proportion of the total landings in the Mediterranean. However, from an economic point of view, four cephalopods, Eledone cirrhosa, Eledone moschata, Octopus vulgaris, and Sepia officinal… Show more

“…The relationship between length and weight was calculated using the following classical equation (1): Samples were collected during the international bottom trawl survey in the Mediterranean (MEDITS) in a time frame ranging from 2012 to 2019. The MEDITS survey was carried out during the summer and fall seasons using a GOC 73 trawl net characterized by a vertical opening ranging between 2.4 and 2.9 m and a 20 mm stretched mesh-size at the cod end [31,32].…”

“…Most information of cephalopod biomass and trait distributions originates from fishery landings (reviewed in Arkhipkin et al., 2015; Sauer et al., 2019), local monitoring programs (e.g. Geraci et al., 2021; Tsikliras, 2021) and other exceptional stock assessments (Arkhipkin et al., 2021). These studies provide valuable information on the biology, diversity and stock biomass of cephalopods at various scales.…”

“…This area is characterized by a complex topography with a strong hydrographic circulation that establishes a stable upwelling system along the shelf edge of its banks. These features result in a hotspot for both biodiversity [1][2][3] and productivity of food resources exploited by national and international fleets [8][9][10][11]. There is a substantial amount of information from bottom trawl surveys conducted on the demersal fauna of Geographical Sub-Area 16 (GSA 16) [GFCM classification], which lies just south of Sicily.…”

“…Indeed, Mediterranean International Trawl Surveys (MEDITS) have been performed routinely since the mid-1990s. These studies assess the status of fishery resources in the Mediterranean region [9][10][11]. However, data on the distribution of mega-benthic fauna within this region are poor.…”
