The purpose of this study is to identify the supply chain actors involved in export planning of a Sri Lankan tea export company while understanding how these actors influence the tea export planning process. Actor-Network Theory (ANT) was incorporated as a theoretical lens to make sense of how both human and non-human actors have influenced the tea export planning process. The study adopted the single-site case study approach under the qualitative methodology. Data has been mainly collected through interviews carried on with the top, middle and lower level managerial employees. In light of ANT, the findings of this study illustrate that human actors: tea department personnel, shipping department personnel, new product development (NPD) team and accounts manager influence the tea export planning process through knowledge, skills and experience. Further, the study reveals that non-human actors: auction system, multiple supplier base, supplier evaluation process, ERP system, shipment scheduling process, government entities and transactional process influence the tea export planning through providing information, facilitating communication and ensuring transparency. The study suggests that the managers and practitioners attached to export oriented companies should be conscious about the influencing factors of each human and non-human actor of the supply chain in the process of planning exports and in solving strategic and operational issues when operating within and beyond Asia. Furthermore, this study aims to fill the lacuna in supply chain and export literature through exploring the supply chain actors (human and non-human) and their influence on the export planning process.

PurposeThis study aims to present a methodological framework to evaluate the relationship between social network centrality, individual competitiveness and network competitiveness.Design/methodology/approachTilapia fish farmers in the Canoas I hydroelectric dam (states of São Paulo and Paraná, Brazil) were provided with a roster of all actors in their network and interviewed to obtain information on relational and competitiveness variables. UCINET was used to calculate the degree centrality of each farmer. Seven competitiveness drivers were combined into a single indicator to determine the level of competitiveness. A four-quadrant matrix was constructed to investigate the relationship between degree centrality and level of competitiveness.FindingsA positive relationship was found between degree centrality and level of competitiveness.Research limitations/implicationsAgents upstream or downstream of fish farming were not interviewed, precluding an in-depth analysis of competitiveness in terms of market structure and market relations. The authors suggest that future studies should investigate the influence of upstream and downstream agents on the social network and competitiveness of fish farmers. It is also important to monitor changes in the level of competitiveness of fish farmers in the event of a national economic crisis.Originality/valueDevelopment of a novel methodological framework on the basis of two methodologies, social network analysis and competitiveness analysis.

PurposeThe effect of market power on allocative efficiency is one of the most important topics in industrial organization and has undergone rigorous investigation since the 1970s. However, empirical studies based on firm-level data are relatively rare, especially with regard to China's tobacco and food industries. Accordingly, this research measures market power and allocative efficiency loss (AEL) of the main tobacco and food industries in China with micro data at firm level. Subsequently, it conducts a comparative analysis on them.Design/methodology/approachThis research applies the New Empirical Industrial Organization (NEIO) model, consisting of five pricing and demand simultaneous equations to measure market power, and the AEL model to measure AEL induced by market power. To match with the micro data at firm level, the study implements a change in the traditional NEIO model by abandoning the aggregating process.FindingsEmpirical results show that China's tobacco industry, among five sectors selected, has the largest market power and thus the highest degree of AEL, whereas other sectors have apparently smaller market power and lower levels of AEL. Comparative analysis demonstrates a coarse positive correlation between market power and AEL in the selected industries. In general, the results accord well with the existing empirical findings and the reality.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has some deficiencies. First, owing to the limitation of high-quality data, the sectors analyzed in this research are insufficient to sum up all the characteristics and rules of China's whole food industry. Second, this research only analyzes seller market power and leaves out buyer market power, which could be a direction for future research.Practical implicationsThe relevant administrations should strictly limit the monopoly behaviors of enterprises and establish a favorable and competitive market environment, especially for the tobacco industry. This suggestion is precisely an important content of China's Supply-side Reform.Originality/valueThe research improves the NEIO model in that it can be estimated with micro data at firm level. To the best knowledge of the authors, very few empirical and comparative analyses exist on market power and AEL for China's tobacco and food manufacturers using micro data.
