Assessing Factors Contributing to the Prevalence of Protein–Energy Malnutrition Among Children Under Five Years of Age Attending Kigoma District Hospital, Tanzania

Abstract: Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is a form of malnutrition that is common in children under 5 years of age in the developing countries and even the developed countries. Young children are the most vulnerable to the vicious cycles of malnutrition, infection and disability, all of which influence the present condition of a child and the future human resource development of the nation as a whole. The prevalence of PEM in the children under five years of age has been shown not to witness a great improvement in Ta… Show more

“…Underweight children have increased susceptibility to malaria through impairment in the function of the immune system. Undernourished children may be incapable to mount appropriate immune response to parasites causing malaria because of reduced T-lymphocytes, impairment of antibody formulation and atrophy of the thymus and other lymphocyte tissues [34,35]. History of malaria illness prior to the recent illness was significantly associated with reduced odds of cerebral malaria.…”

“…Between 2000 and 2019, stunting prevalence globally declined from 32.4 percent to 21.3 percent, and the number of children affected fell from 199.5 million to 144.0 million [4]. In the African region, there has been some progress towards achieving global nutrition targets [5,6]. The global targets for under-five overweight and infant exclusive breastfeeding each have 20 countries on course to meet them, under-five wasting has 12 countries on the course, while under-five stunting has eight countries on course.…”

“…A previous study discovered that children and adolescents do not consume healthy foods at school or on campus [9]. Many developing countries are transitioning from malnutrition to overnutrition [10], [11]. A healthy and safe canteen refers to the food's quality, which must provide the appropriate proportion of energy, fiber, and nutrients to maintain health outcomes [12].…”
