Assessing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Potato Production and Processing in the Czech Republic

Abstract: This study evaluates the impact of selected potato farming and processing activities on the environment in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology was used for this evaluation, and was applied to products cultivated under both conventional and organic production, and processed under technological conditions common in the Czech Republic. Farm questionnaires were supplemented with information from the scientific literature to acquire the necessary data for modelling. The SI… Show more

“…Mouldrý Jr. et al . performed an LCA for the industrial production of potato chips and obtained 2.07 kg CO 2 ‐eq/kg chip, and Nilsson, Sund, and Florén obtained 1.15 kg CO 2 ‐eq/kg potato chip (deep‐fried in palm oil). One manufacturer indicates, on the package (34.5 g), the emissions embedded: 75 g CO 2 ‐eq (=2.17 kg CO 2 ‐eq/kg potato chip) .…”

“…On the contrary, when comparing variants of milk, organic milk was a little emission-less burdensome than conventional milk. The latest from animal studies compared the production of eggs [62], where organic eggs produce almost 40% lower emissions than conventional eggs. Results and emission savings are summarized in the Table 2.…”

“…Example of setting the boundaries of the system within LCA analysis [37] To compare products (systems), it is necessary to define also the functional unit. The functional unit is described as a quantified performance of a product system which serves as a reference unit in a study of life cycle assessment [13].…”
