Assessing Groundwater Dynamics and Hydrological Processes in the Sand River Deposits of the Limpopo River, Mozambique

Abstract: Drought and water scarcity constrain the socioeconomic development of many (semi-)arid regions of Southern Africa. Moreover, due to the increase of water withdrawals upstream, the Limpopo River is no longer perennial in Mozambique. Fortunately, its river bed can store significant amounts of freshwater, because of the occurrence of thick and often coarse sand deposits formed through pronounced dryland weathering, erosion, and sedimentation in the river channel. Such so-called “sand rivers” exist in many parts o… Show more

“…For instance, prolonged flows will allow water access for farmers for a longer period and are likely to enhance recharge of the alluvial aquifers as compared to short duration flow with high magnitude. However, prolonged flows can also mean that there is no access to alluvial aquifers, which may have better quality than a flowing river (Saveca et al, 2022). In addition, Datry et al (2017) indicate that the biodiversity of fauna and flora can be associated with the duration of the dry phases.…”

“…Sand river aquifers of ephemeral rivers form a significant source of water for irrigated horticultural production (Saveca et al, 2022). A sand river aquifer is a water source that is unconfined and comprised of layers of sand, silt, and clay that have been deposited by flowing water along a river channel, its banks, or floodplains (De Hamer et al, 2008).…”

“…Despite these advantages, the scarce quantitative studies available imply an underutilisation of the water stored in these sand rivers in sub-Saharan Africa (Love et al, 2011;Walker et al, 2018;Mpala et al, 2020;Saveca et al, 2022). In (semi-)arid regions where other water resources are scarce, over-abstracted or even absent, sand rivers can provide a reliable alternative (Mansell and Hussey, 2005;Olufayo et al, 2010).…”

“…The Olkeriai in Kenya, and the Tuli and Shashe rivers in Zimbabwe form the arteries of our study regions with the selected farmers (Figure 4-1). They serve as reliable water buffers in dry seasons, despite being located in semi-arid to arid regions in Africa (Love et al, 2011;Saveca et al, 2022). The Olkeriai is situated in Kajiado county in southern Kenya, receiving bimodal rainfall of 675 mm/yr (Bobadoye et al, 2016).…”
