Assessing long-chain ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids: A tailored food-frequency questionnaire is better

Abstract: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including the long-chain (LC) ω-3 PUFAs, are important for health. The aim was to assess if the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria Dietary Questionnaire (ACC DQ) accurately determines PUFA intakes compared with the recently validated electronic PUFA food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Forty-one study volunteers were recruited from the local Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. The method of triads was used to determine validity coefficients by comparing the ACC DQ i… Show more

“…For example, a 100 g serving of salmon provides approximately seven-fold more long-chain omega-3 EFAs than that of 100 g of lean fish, such as whiting [48]. In this regard, tailored questionnaires that are designed to specifically assess EFA intake may have the capacity to more accurately capture dietary intakes for specific nutrients (e.g., fatty acids) compared with generic questionnaires (i.e., questionnaires that assess total dietary intake but do not consider the specific fatty acid sources) [49].…”

“…In addition, there are many sources of LC n-6 PUFA other than fried food. A specific food frequency questionnaire for PUFA intake was not used in this study [ 28 ].…”

“…Furthermore, specific food frequency questionnaire for LC n-3 PUFA intakes was not used in this study. It was reported that a specific food frequency questionnaire to assess LC n-3 PUFA intakes was superior to a generic FFQ [ 43 ]. Therefore, we may not be able to assess LC n-3 PUFA intakes in this study appropriately.…”
