Assessing mango anthracnose using a new three‐dimensional image‐analysis technique to quantify lesions on fruit

Abstract: An accurate image-analysis method was developed to assess quantitatively the spot-like lesions on fruits resulting from pathogen attack. The technique was applied to evaluation of the development and severity of anthracnose of mango fruit, caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides . In this method, a stepper motor rotates the mango fruit along its longitudinal axis while acquiring a sequence of 360 images of its total surface (one image for each degree). This set of images is used to create a pseudoc… Show more

“…For instance, Corkidi et al (2006) proposed the use of a special digital capture and analysis of rotating diseased (Colletotrichum gloesporioides) mango fruits for the estimate of actual severity. Our SAD is proposed as an aid to provide simple, quick and accurate visual estimate of severity in specific views of the fruit and is not intended to provide overall severity estimation on a 3-D surface.…”

“…Although some of the methods used to estimate disease on fruit have been very sophisticated, such as three-dimensional fruit sur face image analysis (14), other methods have relied on two-dimen sional SADs to represent a single face of the approximately spheri cal fruit. Two-dimensional SADs have been developed for fruit diseases (37) and have been validated and demonstrated to improve both accuracy and reliability of rater estimates.…”

“…A severidade refere-se à proporção de área de tecido colonizado, e sua determinação foi feita com o auxílio de escala diagramática específica para a antracnose em mangas, variando de 0 -1% (sem doença); 1 -5% (doença leve); 6 -9% (doença moderada); 10 -49% (doença severa), e 50-100% de área lesionada/fruto (doença muito severa) (CORKIDI et al, 2006).…”
