Decision-makers, researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders often struggle with selecting and prioritizing strategies to manage climate change risks. While recent research extensively explores this issue, the emphasis has largely been on regions other than Africa. This is significant, considering Africa’s anticipated exposure to various and severe impacts of climate change. This study applied a two-stage model that integrates the Step-Wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) and Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment (WASPAS) methods within a unique framework under the influence of spherical fuzzy (SF) conditions. In the initial stage, SF-SWARA determines the relative importance of the criteria, while the subsequent stage involves the SF-WASPAS method to rank the strategies. While the most critical challenges are limited access to finance and inadequacies in climate data, scenarios, and impact models, the solution to be considered is the promotion of a well-coordinated capacity-building programme. Furthermore, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis was conducted to validate the applicability of the proposed model. This research not only identifies and explains the challenges associated with climate change risks management in the African context but also significantly contributes to the body of knowledge by outlining and prioritizing the strategies required to address these challenges.

Practitioners and decision-makers often face difficulties in selecting and prioritizing effective strategies to address challenges to sustainable urban transportation development. Although there has been considerable research conducted on the subject, the Tanzanian context, which is greatly affected by social and environmental problems, has received inadequate attention. Therefore, this study intends to bridge this gap by pinpointing the obstacles to sustainable urban transportation and proposing the most appropriate strategies to tackle them. The study proposes seven strategies and determines five criteria to prioritize them. To accomplish this, the study proposes a novel Fermatean fuzzy-based intelligent decision support model to assess the criteria weights and prioritizes strategies based on the weighted criteria. The study validates the proposed methodology by conducting a sensitivity analysis, which indicates that restricting car use (A5), improving sector coordination (A1), and conducting extensive research on transportation issues (A7) are the top three strategies for promoting sustainable urban transportation. The study’s findings hold significant value in providing urban transportation planners with helpful guidance to develop optimization techniques that can improve transportation systems.

The Fermatean Fuzzy Set (FFS) theory emerges as a crucial and prevalent tool in addressing uncertainty across diverse domains. Despite its recognized utility in managing ambiguous information, recent research lacks a comprehensive analysis of key FFS areas, applications, research gaps, and outcomes. This study, conducted through the Scientific Procedures and Rationales for Systematic Literature Reviews (SPAR-4-SLR) protocol, delves into an exploration of the FFS literature, reviewing 135 relevant articles. The documents are meticulously analyzed based on their integrated methodologies, Aggregation Operators (AOs), linguistic sets, and extensions. Additionally, a thematic analysis, facilitated by the Bibliometrix tool, is presented to provide nuanced insights into future research directions and crucial areas within the literature. The study unveils valuable findings, including the integration of linguistic variables with interval-valued FFS, fostering robust environments for dynamic decision-making—a mere glimpse of the potential directions for future research. The gaps and future directions section further articulates recommendations, offering a structured foundation for researchers to enhance their understanding of FFS and chart future studies confidently.
