High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is playing an increasingly important role in modern power systems, and the resulted power/voltage stability issue has raised widespread concern. This paper presents an on-line power/voltage stability index (PVSI) for multi-infeed HVDC (MIDC) systems. Different from the existing indices which are developed mainly for off-line and static analysis, the proposed PVSI can be applied in real time.Effects of system changes on stability assessment such as change of system states and control strategies are considered. Thus, helpful guidance can be provided for on-line HVDC stability and controls. The PVSI is originally deduced for single-infeed HVDC systems in an ''AC way'' by analyzing the power and voltage stability of both pure AC systems and HVDC systems. Moreover, its on-line application in practical MIDC systems is realized by building an equivalent single-infeed model, and utilizing nowadays measurement and communication infrastructures such as wide-area measurement system (WAMS). The effectiveness of the PVSI is verified through simulations in real-time digital simulator (RTDS).

With the rapid development of ultra-high-voltage (UHV) AC/DC, especially the step-by-step upgrading of the UHV DC transmission scale, security presents new challenges. Commutation failure (CF) is a common fault in line commutated converter (LCC) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power systems. Once failure happens, it may cause power oscillations in a system. In this paper, taking a two-area AC/DC parallel interconnected power system as the example, based on the impulse response model of second-order linear system, the mechanism of power oscillation on the AC tie-line caused by CF are clarified. It is proved that the peak value of the AC tie-line power oscillation is mainly determined by the DC power and the equivalent CF duration, the frequency and damping ratio of dominant area oscillation mode. Meanwhile, the peak time is mainly determined by the oscillation frequency. Finally, the correctness and effectiveness of the algorithms are verified by a simulation analysis of an extended IEEE-39-bus AC/DC parallel interconnected power system. These research results can provide a basis for the arrangement of the operating modes and the formulation of control measures for interconnected power grids.

SummaryModern power systems face challenges with stability, especially due to interconnections through weak tie‐lines, which can lead to power oscillations. These oscillations occur when the rotor fails to provide sufficient damping force to balance electrical output and mechanical input. Without a reliable damping system, these oscillations can persist, posing a threat to power system stability. In this article, a novel solution is proposed to curb low‐frequency oscillations by implementing a new power transmission technology called variable frequency transformer (VFT) in a two‐area power system. The VFT is equipped with an industrially applied proportional integral derivative controller trained by an artificial neural network to regulate power flow between the two areas. Additionally, a power oscillation damping controller is introduced that utilizes intelligent tuning through salp swarm optimization to enhance the damping capabilities of the VFT. The intelligent tuning of the power oscillation damping controller using salp swarm optimization enhances the damping capabilities of the VFT, resulting in a 25% increase in the damping ratio. To evaluate the performance of the VFT‐based system, it has been compared with a well‐established high voltage direct current (HVDC) system through a three‐phase fault analysis and reactive power requirement. Quantitatively, the proposed VFT system achieves a significant improvement in damping power oscillations, reducing their amplitudes by 30% compared to the HVDC system. Furthermore, the system is linearized under specific operating conditions, and eigenvalue analysis is conducted to assess power system stability for both VFT and HVDC cases. Through time‐domain simulations and eigenvalue analysis, our findings demonstrate that the VFT system surpasses the HVDC system in various operational and control aspects, highlighting its positive impact on power system stability.
