Twenty accessions of African Yam Bean, grown at the Teaching and Research Farm of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso during the cropping seasons of May to November, 2014 and 2015 were assessed for genetic diversity and Genotype × Environment interaction effects on trait performance and their ability to produce tuber. The first six Principal Components jointly explained 70.30% of the total variation among the accessions. Vine length, branching pattern, pod number, pod length, seed number, and seed yield contributed mostly to the observed variations. Seed biometric traits were most variable and contributed 52% of total variation. Variance due to genotype accounted for 54.2%, environment 10.5% and G × E interaction accounted for 30.1% of the interaction sum of squares. Accessions, G2, G4, G47, G49 and G50 produced tubers, while accessions G6, G15, G31, G32 and G33 nodulated extensively. Conversely, there was a marginal reduction in seed yield in accessions that either produced tubers or nodules.

Plum (Prunus domestica L.) and its wild relatives are found at different locations in Pakistan, existing in naturalized form, which have not been characterized yet. In the present work, genetic diversity in morpho-physiological characteristics of sixteen plum genotypes growing in the area of Rawalakot, district Poonch, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan were studied. Various parameters like tree size, number of branches per plant, leaf area, number of flowers per plant, blooming period, number and percentage of fruits set per plant, number and percentage of fruits matured per plant, fruit size and fruit weight were taken into count and variation observed in these characteristics was discussed. The results suggested that the plum genotypes differed in their morpho-physiological traits, and this ultimately provides important information on how to make the best use of these plum genotypes in future breeding programmes. The differences were probably due to their genetic make-up as well as prevailing climatic factors in the region.

Genetic diversity trends in twentieth century crop cultivars: a meta analysis

In recent years, an increasing number of papers has been published on the genetic diversity trends in crop cultivars released in the last century using a variety of molecular techniques. No clear general trends in diversity have emerged from these studies. Meta analytical techniques, using a study weight adapted for use with diversity indices, were applied to analyze these studies. In the meta analysis, 44 published papers were used, addressing diversity trends in released crop varieties in the twentieth century for eight different field crops, wheat being the most represented. The meta analysis demonstrated that overall in the long run no substantial reduction in the regional diversity of crop varieties released by plant breeders has taken place. A significant reduction of 6% in diversity in the 1960s as compared with the diversity in the 1950s was observed. Indications are that after the 1960s and 1970s breeders have been able to again increase the diversity in released varieties. Thus, a gradual narrowing of the genetic base of the varieties released by breeders could not be observed. Separate analyses for wheat and the group of other field crops and separate analyses on the basis of regions all showed similar trends in diversity.
