Assessing the Dimensional Validity and Reliability of the University of Florida Critical Thinking Inventory (UFCTI) in Chinese: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis

Abstract: The importance of assessing critical thinking has been emphasized extensively by numerous administrators and educators in higher education worldwide. In a contemporary agricultural sustainable development environment, agricultural students need to develop critical thinking to manage complex situations and to deal with controversial issues in international agriculture settings. From psychological points of view, thinking varies cross-culturally. In other words, people from different cultures think differently. … Show more

“…To accommodate the Chinese students who may have a lower proficiency in English, the UFCTI was translated from English to Chinese by six Chinese bilingual educators. A two-factor confirmatory factor analysis provided an adequate model fit for the Chinese version UFCTI (comparative fit index (CFI) = .95, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) = .94, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) = .05) (Baker et al, 2021). In this study, the two constructs indicated good internal consistency for both the English version and Chinese version.…”

“…The Cronbach's alpha for the engagement construct in the Chinese version was .84, the Cronbach's alpha for the seeking information construct was .92, and the overall reliability of the UFCTI Chinese version was .92. The Cronbach's alpha for the engagement construct in the English version was .76, the Cronbach's alpha for the seeking construct was .84, and the Cronbach's alpha for the overall UFCTI English version was .89 (Baker et al, 2021).…”

“…The AVE values for these two constructs were 0.488 and 0.456, respectively. However, similar to factor loadings, the convergent validity of the construct can still be considered adequate as long as the CR exceeds 0.60 [91,94]. Objective knowledge had a CR of 0.779 and environmental concern had a CR of 0.761, justifying the lower AVE values.…”

“…However, loadings as low as 0.40 can be justified if acceptable values are obtained for other fit indices, like composite reliability (CR) [93]. In this case, the objective knowledge scale had a CR of 0.779, which far exceeds the acceptable cutoff value of 0.60 [91,94] and justifies the lower factor loadings. All standardized item loadings significantly loaded on their constructs (p < 0.001).…”
