Assessing the effect of salinity on the oil quality parameters of Indian mustard (<em>Brassica juncea</em> L. <em>Czern & Coss</em>) using Fourier Transform Near-Infrared Reflectance (FT-NIR) spectroscopy

Abstract: SUMMARY: Calibration models were developed for Fourier Transform Near Infrared Reflectance spectroscopy using PLS method and coefficients of determination (r 2 ) for oil, protein, erucic acid and crude fiber contents were estimated 0.907, 0.922, 0.902, 0.903, respectively. Effects of the salinity on these traits were studied under normal and saline environments in the field (ECe 10.7dS·m ) and nethouse using saline irrigation levels (EC iw 0, 9, 12, 15, 18 dS/m) during 2011-12 and 2012-13. At higher salinity; … Show more

“…In contrast, correlation values between laboratory and predicted results were lower for C 16:0 (0.499, 0.625), C 18:0 (0.501, 0.097), C 18:3 (0.059, 0.412) and C 20:1 (0.017, 0.511) (Tables and ). Similar values of correlation between the external validation set and the calibration model were reported by Singh et al . in Brassica with RSQ 0.907 and SEP value 1.01.…”

“…Salinity and sodicity stresses affect an area of 932.2 million hectares in the world (Szabolcs 1989); an area of nearly 6.73 million hectares is affected by these stresses in India (NRSA 1996, Singh et al 2014. Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern and Coss) is an important oil-seed crop in the world and is grown in more than 50 countries across the globe.…”

“…For this reason, one of the main aims of canola breeding programs is to increase the oil content of seeds (3). However, the oil quantity and quality of canola are markedly reduced under salt stress (4). High salt conditions cause ionic imbalance and high osmotic pressure, which lead to dehydrative stress and oxidative stress (5).…”
