Assessing the genetic diversity of Dioscorea alata and related species from Colombia through inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers

Abstract: Dioscorea, commonly known as yam, is an economically, socially, and culturally-relevant tuber crop in many tropical countries. This study aimed to characterize the genetic diversity of Dioscorea alata L. and related species from Colombia (42 D. alata L., 6 D. bulbifera L., 3 D. rotundata Poir., and 3 D. trifida L. f.) through seven intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. The plant material was collected in five departments of Colombia. The seven ISSR generated 164 bands that showed high polymorphism (83.62… Show more

“…The population II obtained values ranging from 0.50 (GT) to 0.58 (CT), with an average value of 0.54. These data are similar to the ones of previous studies of other allogamous species, such as Chenopodium quinoa (Abd El-Moneim et al, 2021), and Dioscorea alata (Castañeda-Cardona et al, 2020).…”

“…groups might be used for conservation and breeding of this species. Similar results have been reported in other studies of genetic diversity in other fruit species using ISSR markers (Morillo et al, 2017;Castañeda-Cardona et al, 2020;Martínez et al, 2020).…”

“…High polymorphism (83.62%) was also observed in studies on Dioscorea spp. (Castañeda-Cardona et al 2020) in assessment of the genetic diversity of 21 local strains of yam from China using ISSR primers (93.5%) (Wu et al 2014), and 92% of the loci were polymorphic in a study of the genetic diversity of D. alata L. using SSR primers (Massawe and Temu 2023).…”

“…SSR markers have been used for genetic studies of yam germplasm, as they are considered informative and show high discriminatory power (Loko et al 2017;Girma et al 2017;Chen et al 2022;Kalu et al 2022). The ISSR markers also allowed detection of a high level of polymorphism for the Dioscorea alata L. species (83.62%) (Castañeda-Cardona et al 2020) and for 21 local strains of Dioscorea spp. (93.5%) from China (Wu et al 2014) Therefore, considering the social and economic importance of the yam crop and the need for more information regarding the genetic resources of yam generated by farmers, the aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of genotypes of Dioscorea sp.…”
