Assessing the impact of essential tremor on upper limb function

Abstract: We compared the impact of essential tremor on the performance of three manual tasks: drawing spirals, holding a cup full of water and a joystick-controlled tracking test. Tremor amplitude and frequency were measured by accelerometry during the tracking test, when holding the cup and whilst a standard posture was maintained. The inter-relationships between tremor amplitude, frequency and task impairment were then examined. The results showed that the amplitude and frequency of essential tremor (measured from th… Show more

“…The tremor had to be of gradual onset (i.e., slow and progressive) and either (1) present for at least 1 year or (2) accompanied by a family history of the same disorder (one or more reportedly affected first-degree relatives) [9,16] . On an Archimedes spiral, tremor severity had to be moderate or greater (rating 6 2 on the handwriting scale of Bain and Findley [17] ). Based on their medical history, participants were not considered to have ET if their tremor was related to alcohol withdrawal, hyperthyroidism, anxiety, or medications.…”

“…The following assessments are recommended to document the effect of surgical procedures: (1) clinical (0-10) ratings of the severity of different tremor components present in different body parts, [40][41][42] (2) 0 to 10 ratings of tremor in spirals and handwriting samples, [40][41][42] (3) a tremor-related disability and handicap questionnaire, 43 (4) nine-hole pegboard test, and (5) Short Form-36 (SF-36) and Sickness Impact Profile (SIPS) questionnaires. In most instances accelerometry does not provide any useful functional information about the effects of thalamic stimulation on essential tremor, but may be of research interest.…”

“…The hallmark feature of ET is kinetic tremor, which may be associated with varying degrees of functional disability [2][3][4]. The etiology of ET is complex; both genetic and environmental factors are likely contributors [5][6][7][8][9].…”
