Assessing the impact of tidal inundation on the livelihoods of the Chattogram City dwellers in Bangladesh

Abstract

The paper aimed to assess the impact of tidal inundation on the livelihoods of Chattogram City dwellers in Bangladesh. This study employed a mixed-method approach, incorporating various data collection methods, including face-to-face interviews, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews. The analysis utilized the weighted average index (WAI) and rank scale. The research was conducted across five wards in Chattogram City: Chandgaon, West Bakalia, North Halisahar, South Agrabad, and Gosaildanga. The study's findings revealed that city residents indicated multiple impacts resulting from tidal inundation, which also heightened livelihood vulnerability. The research identified 29 indicators of vulnerable livelihoods that significantly impacted residents' well-being, categorized as having a very high, high, and moderate impact, with 26 ranks. Notably, limited empirical research has been conducted on the impact of tidal inundation in Bangladesh's coastal areas. This study's comprehensive insights could guide city planners and policymakers in formulating effective policies for the sustainable livelihoods of coastal communities affected by tidal inundation.
