Assessing the Individual Interviewer Rapport-Building and Supportive Techniques of the R-NICHD Protocol

Abstract: The use of the rapport-building and supportive techniques formulated by the R-NICHD protocol is intended to support children and increase the quality of their statements as well as disclosures without possessing suggestive potential. While the effectiveness of the entire R-NICHD protocol for children who have actually experienced child sexual abuse (CSA) has been supported by research, to date no study assessed the effect of each individual socio-emotional interview technique in both interviewees with and with… Show more

“…As Abelson (1967) notes, if we cannot observe an abstract notion, we cannot establish that a definition necessarily captures that idea. Analysts cannot implement a perspective-independent method to verify whether any corresponding real definition of "Rapport can be defined as the establishment of interpersonal trust between the interviewer and the interviewee, while communicating respect, understanding, and acceptance (Tamm et al, 2021). “…Support during the substantive phase of RP interviews has been found to be associated with a decreased reluctance in this phase, and with more spontaneous, informative, emotionally expressive, coherent, and credible statements made by the children (Ahern et al, 2019;Blasbalg et al, 2018;Blasbalg et al, 2019;Hershkowitz et al, 2021;Karni-Visel et al, 2019, 2021. It should be noted that while support and rapport are likely to be important across cultures, the ways in which social support is best provided may differ between cultures (see Tamm et al, 2021) and thus, the NICHD-R needs to be translated in a culture-sensitive way when used in different cultural settings.…”

“…Also, future studies could look into specific interviewer characteristics (e.g., attitude, level of empathy) that might have an effect on the quality and outcome of the child forensic interview. Because research has shown that rapport building is crucial in child forensic interviews (e.g., Hershkowitz & Lamb, 2020;Tamm et al, 2021), certain personality traits of the interviewer might be important as well. For example, a recent systematic review investigating the effect of interview training courses found that more cognitive demanding skills (such as the use of proper questioning techniques) showed less of an improvement post training, as opposed to basic interviewing skills (such as adhering to the interview protocol).…”
