Assessing the likelihood of the soil surface to condense vapour: The Negev experience

Abstract: The likelihood of dew to provide water to cyanobacteria (CB) and crustose lichens (CL) on soil is a matter of great controversy. Although vapour condensation takes place on cobbles of the Negev Highlands, facilitating lush cover of CL, controversy exists regarding the possible contribution of dew to CB and CL inhabiting the loessial soil of the Negev Highlands. To evaluate this matter, temperature, and measurements of the nonrainfall water (NRW) were conducted during the dewy season (August–November 2019). The… Show more

“…Nevertheless, there were also contradictory accounts, which do not comply with the assumption that surface moistening takes place following dew. For instance, Lázaro et al (2008, p. 263) observe that during dewy mornings, the crustose lichens appear "waterproof'", which is in agreement with detailed dew measurements that were conducted in the Negev biocrusts (Kidron and Kronenfeld, 2020a). While biocrust organisms that protrude above the soil surface, such as mosses, were found to utilize dew in the Negev, the contribution of dew to cyanobacteria or crustose lichens was found to be negligible (Kidron et al, 2002).…”

It was postulated that either the amount is insuffi-b a cient to allow for photosynthesis or that daytime photosynthesis is too short to compensate for the nocturnal carbon loss during nocturnal respiration, subsequently resulting in a negative carbon balance (Kidron and Starinsky, 2019;Kidron and Kronenfeld, 2020a).…”

“…It suggested that LWD in open habitats was at least 5 h higher than that in understorey habitats. RH of 89%–90% can keep wetness duration for up to 10.3 h every night (Kidron & Kronenfeld, 2020). Angle could control dew duration (Kidron, 2005), and measuring devices are often fixed at a 30–45° from the horizontal to measure LWD (Table 8).…”

“…Soil water is an essential element in crop management [1][2][3]. Under natural conditions, water supplies through rainfall [4], water flux from deeper soil water like groundwater [5], incoming water flux from neighboring soil at higher soil water content [6], and fog and dew formation on the soil surface [7][8][9][10]. Human interventions such as cloud seeding [11][12][13] and water irrigation system [14] would supply water for plants' needs.…”
