Assessing the nutritional quality of Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushroom)

Magdalene Eno Effiong,
Chidinma Precious Umeokwochi,
Israel Sunmola Afolabi
et al.

Abstract: There is a huge gap between food production and the exploding population demands in various parts of the world, especially developing countries. This increases the chances of malnutrition, leading to increased disease incidence and the need for functional foods to reduce mortality. Pleurotus ostreatus are edible mushrooms that are cheaply sourced and rich in nutrient with the potential to be harnessed toward addressing the present and future food crisis while serving as functional foods for disease prevention … Show more

“…Several researchers have studied the components of P. ostreatus. Polysaccharides and, in particular, α-and β-glucans [48][49][50]54,56], proteins [18,49], phospholipids [56], chitin/chitosan [54] and amino acids [57] have been identified. Thus, the spectroscopic findings are in agree with the literature.…”

“…The qualitative phytochemical screening of the five P. ostreatus extracts revealed the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, anthrocyanins and betacyanins, quinones, cardiac glycosides, phenols, coumarins, and terpenoids (Table 1). Mushrooms are exceptionally nutritious foods rich in phenols, flavonoids, and other bioactive compounds 15,21 . These compounds have antioxidant properties and can be taken as an exogenous source of antioxidants 21 .…”

“…Mushrooms are high in nutrients such as protein, dietary ber, vitamins, and minerals, all of which benet general health. 1,2 They contain antioxidants, which help to neutralize damaging free radicals, potentially lowering the risk of chronic illnesses like as cancer. 3,4 Mushrooms have anti-inammatory properties that may help prevent certain cancers.…”
