Assessing the Parasight-F test in northeastern Papua, Indonesia, an area of mixed Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax transmission.

Abstract: Abstract. User-friendly, reliable, and inexpensive methods for diagnosing malaria are needed at the primary health care level. During a randomized treatment trial, the Parasight-F test was assessed on days 0, 3, 7, and 28 against standard light microscopy of Giemsa-stained thick blood smears for diagnosing Plasmodium falciparum parasitemia in patients with P. falciparum (n ‫ס‬ 84) or P. vivax (n ‫ס‬ 59) malaria. The median P. falciparum parasite count on day 0 was 2,373/L (range ‫ס‬ 20-74,432/L). At the start … Show more

“…vanus ) are not considered to be primary malaria vectors (Table 4 ). All sporozoite positive specimens were positive for P. vivax , consistent with studies that report that most of the malaria in this area is due to P. vivax [ 45 , 46 ]. The majority of the P. vivax positive specimens were collected in the animal-baited tents.…”

“…[11][12][13][14] This study was not designed to address other issues pertaining to the limitations of MRDDs such as the persistence of HRP-2 post-treatment and the extent of false positivity that may be caused by gametocytemia and rheumatoid factors. [15][16][17][18] Therefore, studies in different patient populations, field conditions, and endemic areas using different test kit lots will be needed to definitively define the performance of this assay.…”
