Assessing the Prevalence of Marital Rape

Abstract: The small literature on marital rape has placed much theoretical weight on the generalization that marital rape rarely occurs within otherwise nonviolent marriages. However, most existing estimates of the prevalence of marital rape have been essentially by-products of research on other problems, without having directly sought marital rape victims per se. Employing an unusually wide range of case-finding strategies to identify marital rape victims, this study does also sustain that central generalization and cr… Show more

“…However, Monson and Langhinrichsen-Rohling (1998) added a fourth type of perpetrator to their typology, the "Sexually Obsessed" perpetrator. The Sexually Obsessed perpetrator is analogous to Finkelhor and Yllo's (1985) "obsessive" type, or the "wife rape only" type (e.g., Hanneke, Shields, & McCall, 1986;Russell, 1990). This type of perpetrator is theorized to desire much deviant sex, but rarely if ever engages in other types of physical violence.…”

“…Other research (Granberg and Granberg 1980) indicates serious reasons for nondisclosure by this exceptionally small percentage of women: rape, wife-beating, and incest are grounds most accepted by the public. Data collected by Hanneke, Shields, and McCall (1986) offer some suggestion that wife-beating and harassment may figure largely in some non-notification. Because their sample is not randomly drawn their figures may be considered rough estimates, but indicate deeper problems underlying spousal notification: in particular, that of volition in marital sex.…”

“…Additional data used in the estimates and analysis come from Hanneke, Shields, and McCall (1986), who collected independent data at the same facility during the same time period. Their study provides useful evidence for estimating the prevalence of marital rape and wife battering.…”

“…During the experience of violence, different subtypes of abuse, for example physical abuse, psychological aggression or threats can occur in conjunction. The results shows that victims of dating violence are often exposed to multiple forms of violence from a partner (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Research studies have also found a significant relationship between physical abuse and psychological aggression (16)(17).…”
