Assessing the Relationship between Poverty and Economic Growth: Does Sustainable Development Goal Can be Achieved?

Abstract: Income inequality, poverty, and economic growth are defined as an economy's exposure to exogenous shocks arising out of poverty. The study used various econometric estimations to measure the effect of inequality and poverty on economic development during 1990 to 2016 in Vietnam. Various econometric estimation tests confirmed the presence of a long-run association between inequality and poverty, and economic growth is the matter of poverty headcount ratio in Vietnam. “…However, based on existing economic theory, the present study supports Sachs (2015), Capelle-Blancard et al (2019) and Crifo and Forget (2015) when ESG is considered. Regarding poverty and SPI, the current findings contradict previous studies (Breunig and Majeed, 2020;Amar and Pratama, 2020;Erlando et al, 2020;Zhu et al, 2022). Considering FI, the current findings oppose Ajakaiye and Tarp (2012) and Van (2021) and do not support the endogenous economic theory.…”

“…2.5.1 Poverty and the nation's development. From the theoretical perspective of economic convergence, Sachs (2015) argues that higher poverty lowers economic development (Breunig and Majeed, 2020;Amar and Pratama, 2020;Erlando et al, 2020;Zhu et al, 2022). As for low income, poor people can use their income for subsistence.…”

“…The BRI aims to reduce poverty in various ways, such as promoting economic growth, international trade, and innovation capacity through cooperation in green finance, green energy, and green trade (Harlan, 2021). This development‐oriented poverty reduction model not only increases employment opportunities and income levels for countries but also allows impoverished populations to participate in the economic growth process and share in the benefits of growth (Zhu et al, 2022). This poverty reduction effect is particularly evident in African countries, the BRI investments and foreign trade cooperation contribute to poverty reduction efforts in Africa.…”

“…It is well known that income inequality and economic growth are usually regarded as exogenous shocks to an economy due to poverty. Inequality seems to be closely related to poverty, and scholars generally believe that it will have a negative impact on economic growth [68]. As pointed out in the literature by Bui et al [69], the existence of inequality can undermine the effective implementation of policies, thereby hindering economic growth.…”
