“…Through purposive sampling, I sought to capture among a diverse set of households the socioeconomic, political and environmental variables that might influence decisions to send family members to Bangkok or to restructure household economies (see Tables 2 and 3 for the socio-demographic profile of sampled households and those responsible for household agricultural production). The objective was to consider the ways in which agrarian families in urbanizing spaces used economic diversification, labor mobilities and migrant remittances to cope with or adjust to urbanization effects (see also Gullette and Singto, 2015;Gullette et al, 2017). Though the peri-urban sections of Nakhon Ratchasima and Samut Prakan have unique characteristics, such as ecological conditions or landholdings, field sites in both provinces exhibit varied types of industrial growth and patterns of urbanization that influence vulnerabilities experienced by families continue agrarian activities even as industry expands due to their proximity to the Laem Chabang deep seaport and Chonburi.…”

“…Here, primary sector activities such as agriculture diminished in importance while lands were converted to support secondary and tertiary economic sectors. Rates of urbanization were strongest for a four‐year period starting in 2000, when urban build‐up expanded and agricultural land decreased proportionately (Gullette, Thebpanya, and Singto Forthcoming). Thailand's efforts to increase industrial manufacturing and distance itself from agricultural‐based economies created notable challenges, such as providing sufficient infrastructure for industrialization, limiting pollution and environmental damage, and ensuring degrees of support for agrarian livelihoods within development initiatives.…”
