One demand imposed by the global market is the possession of adequate soft skills, a challenge commonly faced by STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) graduates. This challenge is particularly prominent in China, which produces millions of STEM graduates annually. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop and research programs facilitating the acquisition of soft skills, with a specific focus on teamwork, among Chinese engineers. To this end, we created a team-based project as part of a semester-long scientific English communication course at a Sino–foreign STEM university in China. The project aimed at fostering valuable soft skills through active learning, including teamwork, communication, and collaboration. In this report, we examine written reflections by students, aiming to assess their perceptions of soft skill development and overall experience resulting from their participation in the team-based project. Our results show the self-reflected soft skills development was considerable, and, unexpectedly, a noteworthy outcome of the project was the significant development of interpersonal connections, resulting in a positive experience and friendship development. Consequently, the findings of this study shed light on how teamwork can foster soft skills and friendship development, the latter often referred to as relationship development, another soft skill in the 21st century.

Using Likelihood Ratio Table and Naïve Bayes Classifier Method to Holistically Assess Codesign Programmes and Methods

The concept of inclusivity involved an understanding of people, programmes and places, embedded with complex issues. 21 student designers took part in a first-of-its-kind five-day codesign programme to develop solutions for inclusive and engaged communities with residents. This quasi-experimental study aimed to develop a value-based approach using likelihood ratio table and a Naïve Bayes classifier method to assess the success of a codesign programme, in comparison to past programmes with different design challenges. Methodology proposed a systematic investigation to evaluate this programme holistically. Students discussed with stakeholders to uncover the complexities of human and environmental factors in design at early stage of ideation, and semi-structured participants’ observation tasks were considered instead of researcher's observations in the method of assessment. Selected teams were introduced to two new design methods to empathise better with seniors, i.e., Care Circle and See and Shoot. Findings revealed that these teams showed greater levels of critical inquiry when overcoming three key challenges, i.e., (1) identifying key personas, (2) examining potential use environment, and (3) access to market.

Social informatics is an interdisciplinary area that examines how information and communication technologies (ICT) and the complex web of social and cultural contexts interact and change over time. This study not only helps with the design and use of ICT but also shows how these technologies significantly affect society and culture. It encourages new ideas, collaborations between different fields, and policymaking insights, which drives technological innovation and a better knowledge of how ICT affects society. The Conceive, Design, Implement, operate (CDIO) educational system stands out as a new and innovative teaching method. It emphasizes active learning and gives engineering students both technical and social skills. Its use in social informatics ushers in a new era of education that combines innovation and technology to help students become strong and independent. Future study on CDIO programs in social informatics education has the potential to augment the technical proficiency and social consciousness of graduates, thereby rendering them significant contributors to the field.
