Institutions (rules of law) are important to tourism activities. However, national institutions cannot become effective when the execution of rules of law is inconsistent at the local levels. This study thus examines the role of local governance arrangements on the performance of tourism companies, focusing on environmental governance quality. Utilizing institutional theory, we propose a U-shaped relationship between tourism performance and environmental governance. When environmental governance arrangements are initially implemented, the performance of local tourism companies may be negatively affected due to institutional conflicts. However, as new environmentally responsible values are gradually institutionalized, the performance of the local tourism sector will improve. Analyzing more than three thousand tourism companies in Vietnam in 2018 using instrumental variable technique to control for endogeneity, we find some evidence to support the U-shaped function. Also, it is found that the U-shaped effect is stronger on foreign inbound tourists than on domestic tourists.

The pro-environmental behavior of tourists (PEBT) can reduce the impact of tourism activities on the environment, which has attracted more and more attention from scholars. Based on the 159 articles of the PEBT from 2003 to the present in the “Web of Science” database, analyzing the overall characteristics, core knowledge, and knowledge evolution of this field with the help of CiteSpace and Vosviewer software, to systematically grasp the development panorama and find the future direction of the research on PEBT. The results show that economics, ecology, and psychology have a strong knowledge spillover effect for research on PEBT. Three regional research circles, eight-core scientific communities, and four core prior knowledge groups have formed for research on PEBT. The research content mainly focuses on exploring the measurement, forming mechanism, and influencing factors of PEBT. The effect of attitude or place attachment to PEBT has once been the research hotspot in this field. The research focus is to explore PEBT under multiple scenarios from the perspective of multi-disciplinary in recent years. Finally, a series of directions for future research on PEBT were put forward, aiming to bring some useful references to scholars.

The progress and trend of pro-environmental behavior research: a bibliometrics-based visualization analysis

Pro-environmental behavior (PEB) has always been a hot topic in academic and practical, and it is highly necessary to explore the research progress and development trend of PEB. Based on 1038 relevant literatures published and the Web of Science core database, this paper used citation analysis, co-word analysis and cluster analysis methods to systematically analyze the dynamic evolution process of PEB’s research topics, knowledge base and subject areas. The results show that PEB research is currently in a period of rapid growth. And PEB research presents typical multidisciplinary characteristics, mainly focuses on Psychology-Education-Social, Economics-Economic-Political, Environmental-Toxicology-Nutrition and other disciplines. Then, this study also finds that the PEB research hotspots mainly concentrated in seven directions such as “Environmental cognition, emotion and motivation process”, etc., which can be further classified into three horizontal levels and three vertical levels. This study will provide valuable theoretical and practical reference for the future research of PEB.
