Assessment of 210Po and 210Pb in marine biota of the Mallipattinam ecosystem of Tamil Nadu, India

Abstract: To provide baseline data on background radiation levels for the future assessment of the impact of nuclear and thermal power stations, a systematic study was carried out in the Mallipattinam ecosystem of Tamil Nadu, India. Mallipattinam is located between the Kudankulam and Kalpakkam nuclear power plants and near to Tuticorin thermal power plant. Water, sediments, seaweeds, crustaceans, molluscs, and fish were collected to measure the concentrations of (210)Po and (210)Pb. The concentrations of (210)Po and (21… Show more

“…In the present study, the activity was generally found higher in the group clupeiforms. A similar type of finding was reported for natural radionuclides from waters of the Gulf of Mannar (Bukhari 2004;Khan et al 2007;Suriyanarayanan et al 2010). Clupeiforms are mostly pelagic groups characterized by certain unique combination of biological features, which include formation of large groups (shoaling), feeding on plankton and nekton, fast growth rate, and short life span (2-4 years).…”

“…In the present study, the Po-210 concentration in shrimp is comparable with the values reported for North Atlantic, Baltic Sea and global average value [43][44][45][46]. Much higher values were observed for different places of India which might be the impact of nuclear power station [47][48][49][50].…”

“…The observed concentration factor values obtained for molluscs was compared with other studies [16][17][18] comparatively higher than the values published by the IAEA [9] which is 2×10 4 for molluscs. Furthermore, the concentration factor value of cockle analyzed in this study is lower than the values reported by Suriyanarayanan et al [19] who studied about the radioactivity in nuclear power plant area of India. …”
