Assessment of a New Undergraduate Module in Musculoskeletal Medicine

Abstract: In conclusion, the musculoskeletal module described in this paper represents an educational advance at undergraduate (i.e., medical-school) level as demonstrated by the improvement in scores in a validated examination. As pressure on medical curricula grows to accommodate advancing medical knowledge, it is important to continue to improve, assess, and consolidate the position of musculoskeletal medicine in contemporary medical education.

“…However, taking electives in orthopaedic surgery [11] and making it the top residency choice are associated with obtaining good scores on the basic competency examination [16]. These studies express concerns about the adequacy of the musculoskeletal curriculum in the respective medical schools and suggest an increase in mandatory musculoskeletal education and its scheduled time [11], taking electives in orthopaedics [13] and using a special advanced programme [17].…”

“…Learners recognize the lack of exposure as a gap in their training yet rate musculoskeletal medicine as an important constituent of their future careers, and, when taught, students interested in musculoskeletal medicine are more likely to perform well in examinations 6 . Previous work in Ireland showed a difference in examination performance between graduate and undergraduate students 7 . In this study, graduate students are students who enter medical school with a prior degree, and undergraduate students are those entering medical school directly from second-level education.…”

“…Current evidence suggests that medical student knowledge of musculoskeletal medicine is poor; studies show pass rates of 2% to 25% for medical students using a standardized test [6][7][8][9] . Reports of curricular exposure to musculoskeletal medicine range substantially; in the United States 10 , twenty-five of the 122 schools that were surveyed offered formal training in musculoskeletal medicine.…”

“…In fact, these authors recommend adoption of an intensive ‘bootcamp’ model at the beginning of residency to develop requisite technical skills [26, p.748]. IC models have been successfully used in other pre-residency and final year medical school courses, including musculoskeletal injury management in primary care [27], colonoscopy training [28], and surgical specialty skills preceding surgical residency [29]. With the advent of accelerated medical school education [30], an IC may be a viable method in streamlining traditional courses throughout medical school education.…”
