Background: In the present study, the tolerance of plantain tree species (Platanus orientalis, Morus nigra and Ailanthus altissima) to air pollution was evaluated using Air Pollution Tolerance Index (ATPI) and Anticipated Performance Index (API) index in Isfahan city (Iran). Methods: For this purpose, three dominant trees growing at six stations in Isfahan was selected and then sampling of the tree leaves was performed, after being transferred to the laboratory, the ATPI and API index were calculated. Results: The results of calculating the ATPI in the leaves of M. nigra, P. orientalis and A. altissima species showed that the highest values of ATPI index was obtained in M. nigra at 20.77 and then detected in P. orientalis and A. altissima with the values 14.90 and 14.33 respectively. According to API values Morus nigra had the best performance (Score = 6 so it classified as the Excellent) while P. orientalis and A. altissima had very good and intermediate performance, respectively. Conclusion: According to ATPI and API index most tolerant tree species was Morus nigra, so it would be the most suitable species for plantation programme in urban and pollutant areas followed by Platanus orientalis and Ailanthus altissima. As well as our results suggest that Platanus orientalis and Ailanthus altissima can be used as bio-indicators of air pollution due to their low ATPI scores (lower than 16). The present study suggests that the combination of both the ATPI and API indices for identifying and selection of plant species is very useful for plantation in urban areas.

Effects of vehicular emission on two plants Amaranthus spinosus Linn. and Croton bonplandianum Baill, collected from polluted site and from relatively less polluted site/control site of Kolkata city of West Bengal, India was studied. Photosynthetic pigment content, proline content, phosphatase activity and Hill activity, heavy metal contents and their relevance to be used as phytoremediators was investigated. Decrease in pigment content and increase in proline content and phosphatase activity was observed in the plants from polluted areas. Micromorphological studies revealed the effect of automobile emission on epidermal cells and stomatal size on both the experimental plants. Data indicated that between the two plants, A. spinosus was more susceptible and C. bonplandianum was more tolerant to vehicular pollution. Bangladesh J. Bot. 51(2): 207-216, 2022 (June)

El estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la contaminación del aire por partículas sedimentables en domicilios en la zona urbana de la Provincia de Leoncio Prado, Departamento de Huánuco. El tipo de estudio fue transversal y de nivel descriptivo, la muestra estuvo conformada por 12 zonas de monitoreo. Para el diseño del soporte de placas receptoras, la recolección de muestras y cálculos de la concentración de partículas sedimentables se utilizó los procedimientos del Boletín Oficial del Estado de 1976. Los resultados indican que para la zona de la Av. Amazonas fue de 0.372 mg/cm2/mes, Jr. Julio Burga 0.384 mg/cm2/mes, Av. Raymondi 0.430 mg/cm2/mes, Naranjillo Centro 0.478 mg/cm2/mes, Electrocentro 0.633 mg/cm2/mes, Naranjillo Entrada 0.705 mg/cm2/mes, Afilador 0.722 mg/cm2/mes, Av. Raymondi 0.955 mg/cm2/mes, Brisas del Huallaga 0.966 mg/cm2/mes, Castillo Grande Entrada 0.989 mg/cm2/mes, Supte San Jorge 1.018 mg/cm2/mes y Castillo Grande Centro 1.148 mg/cm2/mes. En conclusión, existió 8 zonas de monitoreo que excedieron los Límites Máximos Permisibles (LMP) de 0.5 mg/cm2/mes establecidas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).
