The development of low-carbon binders has been recognized as a means of reducing the carbon footprint of the Portland cement industry, in response to growing global concerns over CO2 emissions from the construction sector. This paper reviews recent progress in the three most attractive low-carbon binders: alkali-activated, carbonate, and belite-ye'elimite-based binders. Alkali-activated binders/materials were reviewed at the past two ICCC congresses, so this paper focuses on some key developments of alkali-activated binders/materials since the last keynote paper was published in 2015. Recent progress on carbonate and belite-ye'elimite-based binders are also reviewed and discussed, as they are attracting more and more attention as essential alternative low-carbon cementitious materials. These classes of binders have a clear role to play in providing a sustainable future for global construction, as part of the available toolkit of cements.

The aim of RILEM TC 247-DTA ‘Durability Testing of Alkali-Activated Materials’ is to identify and validate methodologies for testing the durability of alkali-activated concretes. To underpin the durability testing work of this committee, five alkali-activated concrete mixes were developed based on blast furnace slag, fly ash, and flash-calcined metakaolin. The concretes were designed with different intended performance levels, aiming to assess the capability of test methods to discriminate between concretes on this basis. A total of fifteen laboratories worldwide participated in this round robin test programme, where all concretes were produced with the same mix designs, from single-source aluminosilicate precursors and locally available aggregates. This paper reports the mix designs tested, and the compressive strength results obtained, including critical insight into reasons for the observed variability in strength within and between laboratories.

A exposição intensa das estruturas de concreto a situações inadequadas e ausência de manutenção podem conduzir a perigos potenciais, fazendo-se necessário ações de reforços e reparos para garantir a segurança e a durabilidade. No entanto, o impacto das soluções atualmente empregadas resulta na busca por opções mais sustentáveis. Este artigo relata a caracterização de um material álcali ativado à base de cinza volante e metacaulim Flint, a fim de inferir o seu potencial uso no reparo de estruturas de concreto. O estudo das propriedades reológicas e mecânicas sugerem que o ligante álcali ativado de cinza volante e metacaulim possui tempo de pega e resitências mecânicas adequadas para a aplicação em reparos rápidos em estruturas de concreto, sendo uma opção para os atuais materiais de reparo, além de representar uma solução socioeconômica e sustentável para os efeitos da cadeia de uma energia mais limpa e de custos adicionais na exploração mineral.
