Assessment of an additive index for plaque accumulation on complete maxillary dentures

Abstract: There appears to be a relation between accumulation of plaque on complete maxillary dentures and denture stomatitis. The present index was introduced to assess the location and amount of plaque in some areas of the fitting surfaces of complete maxillary dentures. Scores were recorded in five defined areas on the denture base. Four ranked scores were used: 0 - no visible plaque, 1-plaque visible only by scraping on the denture base with a blunt instrument, 2-moderate accumulation of visible plaque, and 3-abunda… Show more

“…After the interview, the dentist performed an oral examination to assess oral status, the presence of dental plaque, and gum inflammation according to the Standard of Dental Examination in School Health and Safety Act (Japanese School Dental Association 2007). Denture plaque was assessed using a modification of the Ambjørnsen Denture Plaque Index (Ambjørnsen et al 1982). The presence of plaque on dentures was scored from 0 to 3 using the criteria proposed by Ambjørnsen, in which 0 is equivalent to no visible plaque, 1 is equivalent to plaque visible only by scraping on the denture base with a blunt instrument, 2 is equivalent to a moderate accumulation of dental plaque, and 3 is equivalent to an abundance of plaque.…”

“…18 , onde escores 0 ou 1 foram atribuídos às superfícies vestibular e lingual de todos os dentes segundo a presença ou ausência de placa bacteriana visível (índice de placa visível -IPV). Nos idosos edêntulos, usuários de prótese total superior, foi empregado o índice de limpeza da prótese proposto por Ambjorsen et al 19 . A presença ou ausência de placa bacteriana foi registrada em cinco áreas da superfície interna da prótese total superior após uma rápida lavagem com água.…”
