Coccidiosis is the most important intestinal parasitic disease of poultry worldwide. It may lead to high economic losses in poultry because of the high mortality rates and high cost of medication. The present study aimed to evaluate the resistance of Eimeria spices local isolates to anticoccidials and to study the efficacy of live attenuated vaccines and/or prebiotics in control of Eimeria infection in Fayoumi chickens. Seventy gut samples of Faioumy chickens at 29-39 days old suspected for coccidiosis infection were collected from the research station of animal production at Malawi city, El-Minia Governorate, and subjected to isolation and morphological identification. Resistance of Eimeria species to anticoccidial drugs was evaluated using anticoccidial sensitivity profiles 1 (ASP1) and 2 (ASP2). Evaluation of the effectiveness of living attenuated vaccine (Fortegra) and/or prebiotic (Agrimos) in control of coccidiosis was done using experimental challenge with isolated Eimeria species. It was concluded that using morphological methods for identification of Eimeria spp. in Fayoumi chickens, five Eimeria spp. could be isolated; E. mitis, E. maxima, E. acervuline, E. tenella, and E. praecox. The present study provides evidence for the resistance of isolated Eimeria spp. to toltrazuril and good sensitivity to sulfaclozine and amprolium in fayoumi chickens. This study showed that living attenuated vaccine is effective for control of coccidiosis and better results will be obtained in case of addition of prebiotic to vaccine. The use of prebiotics in control of Eimeria infection is not effective.

Background A protozoan disease termed coccidiosis is common worldwide and affects both domestic and wild animals. New alternatives must be discovered because traditional coccidiostats are becoming less effective. More recently, nanomedicine has been a better option for treating a wide range of diseases. Purpose This study aimed to investigate the role of biosynthesized selenium nano-particles (Bio-SeN) utilizing neem leaf extract on the outcome of renal damage caused by murine coccidiosis. Methods In this study, 25 mice were employed, and five groups (five mice/group) were formed: Group 1, this group is considered as control; Group 2, this group was noninfected and received Bio-SeN for 5 days; and Groups 3, 4, and 5: infected groups received 103 Eimeria papillata oocysts. Following that, for 5 days, Group 4 was administered Bio-SeN, while Group 5 was given amprolium (120 mg/kg). On the fifth day post-infection (p.i.), oocyst output, as well as body weight, was recorded, and mice were euthanized so that blood could be drawn for biochemical examination. The kidneys were also removed to prepare histological sections and homogenate for the determination of oxidative damage markers. Results The results demonstrated that by day 5 p.i., mice treated with Bio-SeN after infection with E. papillata had significantly reduced oocyst output in their feces. Body weight gain was significantly reduced by Eimeria infection to −6.07%, and it improved to −3.64% with Bio-SeN treatment. Significant degenerative alterations in the form of vacuolation and inflammatory infiltration in the renal tubules, together with the presence of erythrocytes in some blood sinusoids, were linked to infection. Furthermore, the infected mice’s protein and carbohydrate contents were disturbed by the infection. Urea, creatinine, and uric acid levels in the kidneys significantly increased as a result of the Eimeria infection. In the infected mice, these alterations result in oxidative damage. During the Bio-SeN treatment, all of these infection-induced parameters show significant changes. Conclusion Overall, our findings show that Bio-SeNs significantly exhibit a significant in vivo renal response against murine coccidiosis.

Background Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) are a novel macromolecule extracted from the herbal plant Astragali radix with potential biological activity such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer, and immunomodulatory properties. Objectives The present research emphasizes on some of the biological characteristics of this product including its phytochemical screening, its effective LD50, its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticoccidial, and antimicrobial activities in vitro. Materials and methods Phytochemical screening of the tested extract proved that it contained alkaloids, flavonoids, and glycoside components. Testing its efficacy as bactericidal versus Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida and Staphylococcus aureus its value as a coccidiocidal drug against five chicken Eimeria species oocysts and its effect on the level of DNA genotoxic damage using comet assay proved high significant efficacy (P≤0.05) in the form of marked inhibition zone of bacteria, considerable sporulation inhibition percentage in oocysts as well as high genotoxic damages in the DNA. Result and conclusion The study proved the presence of a direct relationship between the increase in APS concentrations and exposure time and the rate of sporulation inhibition and DNA damage in oocysts subjected to various doses of APS. This DNA damage was determined by marked variations in tail’s length (µm), the percentage of DNA in the tail segment, and tail’s moment were used to demonstrate this relationship (µm). In conclusion, APS proved to be a potential herbal to have anticoccidial and antibacterial attributes in controlling both infections in chickens.
