Assessment of Automotive Coatings Used on Different Metallic Substrates

Abstract: Four epoxy primers commonly used in the automotive industry were applied by gravity pneumatic spray gun over metallic substrates, specifically, steel, electrogalvanized steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, and aluminum. A two-component polyurethane resin was used as topcoat. To evaluate the performance of the different coating systems, the treated panels were submitted to mechanical testing using Persoz hardness, impact resistance, cupping, lattice method, and bending. Tribological properties of different coating … Show more

“…Furthermore, these automated processes have undergone improvements that ensure worker safety and increase the ratio of deposited paint-to-paint sprayed [12]. Nevertheless, automobile paint shops are still a major energy-consuming area and the most expensive operational aspect of an automobile assembly plant, consuming 30%-50% of the total costs of the manufacturing of automobiles [13]. These costs are wrapped into the energy used for air handling and conditioning (HVAC), as well as for paint drying and treatment of emissions generated by paint droplets that are not deposited on automobile surfaces; the painting booths must be purged to remove evaporated solvent, overspray paint particles, and regulated pollutants (like VOCs).…”

“…Where: W was the weight loss in milligrams of the coupon, ρ was 7.78, the density of the mild steel sample in g/cm 3 ; A was 160, the exposure area of the mild steel coupon in square centimeters; and T was 840, the exposure time of the coupon in hours. The evaluated CPR results were used to determine the percentage protection efficiencies (PP) of the steel coupon by each coating in accordance with the equation 4 [25].…”

“…Corrosion and wear of vehicle body parts are two of the most serious issues confronting the automotive industry [3,4]. Various types of corrosion, such as stress corrosion cracking, rusting, corrosion fatigue, and pitting, and their different combination levels, can deteriorate automobile chassis in synergism with wear and cause the vehicle to perform abnormally in service with excessive vibrations and noise, wobbling, motion instability, failure, poor aesthetic impression, etc.…”

“…The parameters to judge the appearance quality are paint smoothness, color, and gloss. Bensalah et al [101] studied the performance of the different coating systems over metallic substrates. Researchers aim to characterize the mechanical, tribological, and corrosion behaviors of commercial coating primers and commercial topcoats that are applied on different substrates.…”
