Assessment of Capacitance for Self-Excited Induction Generator in Sustaining Constant Air-Gap Voltage under Variable Speed and Load

Abstract: The concept of a Self-Excited Induction Generator (SEIG) has introduced the concept of the placement of an induction machine for power generation in an isolated mode with external capacitance. The produced output voltage and generated frequency in an SEIG greatly depends on speed, load, and terminal capacitance. To maintain constant air-gap voltage against a varying speed and load, a corresponding supply of reactive power through capacitors is needed. The selection of the required capacitance while there is co… Show more

“…Such reactive power issues are governing as an important ancillary service for the system operations along with balancing the electric power supply and demand. In most of the available studies technical issues are discussed in which fast acting dynamic compensation is used to control the system voltage response in minimum time [8][9][10][11]. It has been investigated that the use of dynamic compensators alone makes the system compensation costly and static compensators alone cannot be used for voltage control.…”

“…The regulation of voltage and the stability in the voltage build-up process of SEIG are sensitively affected by excitation capacitance, rotor speed, and the variation of motor parameters and load [21], [22]. It is essential to ensure, the appropriate value of capacitor is basic essential for the SEIGbased system to self excitation [23], [24], which provided the lagging magnetizing reactive power to maintain the air gap flux linkage of induction machine between the stator and rotor [25].…”
