HIGHLIGHTS Seven approaches present solutions for urban densification  Successful roof stacking requires integrating urban, engineering and architectural aspects  European cities have a great potential to be densified through roof stacking  30% of the population increase could be covered by roof stacking in Brussels ABSTRACTFacing the need to accommodate a growing number of inhabitants in major European cities, this research aimed to establish a methodology that facilitates decision making on urban densification through roof stacking.The methodology adopts a systematic approach on three consecutive levels: urban, engineering, and social.Multiple criteria are identified to assess and map the roof stacking potential in terms of location and number of added floors. The Brussels Capital Region was chosen as a case study to experiment with the developed workflow chart and validate the proposed approach, using ArcGIS software, by creating a map of the urban densification potential through roof stacking of Brussels at the city scale. The results show a realistic potential of accommodating 30% of the expected population increase in Brussels by the year 2040 using only roof stacking, provided that the current urban regulations are respected. In addition, a theoretical potential to accommodate more than the expected population increase by the same year is proposed provided that urban planning regulations are relaxed in relation to the height of buildings. Further applications to other cities in 2 Europe would help create additional opportunities to develop an automated tool for estimating such potentials on a wider scope.

The main objective of this study is to analyze the spatio-temporal changes in land cover and land use, (1984–2010), as well to simulate future land cover for 2030 in the Neka River Basin, including the Hyrcanian forest, in northern Iran. For this purpose, we used detailed land cover maps for the years 1984, 2001 and 2010. The results showed that the highest deforestation occurred in the boundaries between forest and agriculture areas between 1984 and 2010. Comparing the observed and predicted land cover in 2010 yielded agreement of 96.41%. From 1984 to 2010, landscape metrics showed that the forest area evolved to more fragmentation, with less shape complexity and less connectivity. Projections for the future are consistent with observed changes for the Neka landscape, with a tendency to continue disaggregating and increasing diversity in a number of different patch types. Between 2010 and 2030, we observed the arrival of new crops, rangelands, and urban areas within the remaining areas of homogeneous forest. Changes in the Hyrcanian forest will cause alteration in ecosystem services, such as erosion control, water yield, timber harvest, and ground water reservation. Results of this work may represent a useful tool to provide strategies and territorial planning for sustainable management of the fragile Hyrcanian forest ecosystems in the Neka Basin.

Abstract:Cities planning have been lead to constructions with no attention on hygienic necessities especially in dense areas. Creating new land uses is necessity to response the urban needs and residents and resulted in green spaces decrease. It caused environmental pollutions. Attention to environmental problems has increased in urban development progresses. Sustainable, healthy and green cities formations are derived from environmental concepts. Parks have strategic importance to life conditions improvement. In addition to existence, desirability is considerable. This research has been done with the aim of Ahwaz green space desirability assessment which is 3rd IRAN extensive city. Desirability Indices have been selected as economic, social, safety and environmental from people and experts point of view. Assessment criteria are: proximity to rivers, residential, educational centers, facilities and equipments, cultural centers, compatibility to landuses, access to communication nets, high population density and percapita green spaces. Research statistical societies are 384 citizenry and 30 experts. Different indices were weighted by Expert Choice software in AHP model. Regions classification done in 5categories by data layers overlying in GIS as: very good to inappropriate. Social utility to green spaces improvement with 0.300 score in priority according to experts. Safety is preferred in accordance to citizenry and T model (0.603). All 4 areas except no.3 have deficiency. Center toward west has the best conditions to develop. These results can help planners significantly to understand, prioritize and solve cities problems.
