“…2,3 Large live animal models offer high fidelity simulations due to their close similarity with human anatomy, while also providing an anesthetized patient with active perfusion for practicing surgical and hemostatic techniques. Prior studies have used porcine models to evaluate chief resident readiness for fundamental skills and procedures, such as ostomy creation and laparoscopic cholecystectomy 4 Porcine models for training have been successfully utilized by cardiovascular surgery programs to train for complex surgeries such as coronary-artery bypass grafts and aortic surgery, in addition to the introduction of a formalized course for trauma exposure 5,6 We describe a research experience that utilizes large animal models for translational research with the additional purpose of advancing a trainee's operative abilities. At our tertiary care academic research institution, residents dedicate 1 year to translational research after two clinical years.…”
