Assessment of critical rainfall scenarios for slope stability analyses based on historical rainfall records in Singapore

Abstract: Rainfall-induced slope failure occurs in many countries including Singapore where slopes are mostly covered with residual soils. Although the significance and impact of rainfall infiltration in inducing slope failures are widely investigated, there have been diverse conclusions regarding the relative roles between soil and rainfall to slope failures under various environmental conditions. In this study, parametric studies were carried out for seven rainfall scenarios and two soils to explore the critical rainf… Show more

“…The effective precipitation is more closely related to research and civil-engineering purposes. Thus, the effective precipitation datasets provide essential data required in the study of landslides and slope stability [43,45]. For instance, civil engineers use specialized software and models (e.g., Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-Based Regional Slope-Stability Model TRIGRS) [46] and Scoops 3D is widely used for the determination of slope stability with spatial scale datasets [47].…”

“…For the effective precipitation calculation, a normalization raster of PIM was used [43]. The procedure for the calculation of the effective precipitation takes into account the subsurface hydrologic properties, lithology, soil infiltration capacity, and slope as defined in previous specialty studies [41,44].…”

“…When the slope is steep or certain geologic conditions are present, the clustered landslides may evolve into debris flows [14]. Rainfall-induced slope instability is usually related to slope type, gradient, soil properties, and rainfall intensity [15,16]. Controlling the gradients and types of slopes is one of the effective measures used to reduce rainfall damage [17,18], and the flatter the slope is, the higher the safety factor is during rainfall events [16].…”

“…Antecedent soil moisture correlates more strongly with riverine flow. Antecedent soil moisture and rainfall are the important factors influencing riverine flow discharge [14,19], and the combination of antecedent rainfall and intra-event rainfall is vital to generate riverine flow discharge and sediment loads [14,20]. Larger floods caused by extreme rainfall respond more strongly to antecedent rainfall [21,22].…”
