RESUMEN:El profesionalismo ha tomado gran relevancia en la educación para profesionales de la salud, debido a que existe evidencia de su impacto en la calidad de atención a los pacientes. Se ha reportado que las prácticas poco profesionales incurridas por estudiantes tienden a repetirse posteriormente en su actividad profesional. El profesionalismo es un constructo que refleja valores, cultura, idioma y acuerdos sociales, por lo cual no se sugiere extrapolar una definición desde un contexto a otro. Por ello, un punto de partida es obtener una definición de profesionalismo adaptada culturalmente al contexto donde se encuentra inmersa. El objetivo de este estudio fue obtener una definición de profesionalismo en odontología, sus dimensiones y atributos consensuados por representantes de distintos programas de odontología de universidades chilenas. Se utilizó una metodología mixta en dos fases. En la fase 1 el diseño cualitativo exploratorio tuvo una aproximación por Teoría Fundamentada, donde se desarrollaron dos grupos focales (docentes y estudiantes de odontología) y se analizó la data con método de comparación constante y codificación abierta. En la fase 2 se realizó una consulta a expertos utilizando un diseño explicativo secuencial, a través de un Panel Delphi y un cuestionario con preguntas cerradas y abiertas, donde se realizó análisis de contenido. Se obtuvo una definición de profesionalismo en odontología, consensuada, transversal y adaptada al contexto nacional, con cinco dimensiones (contextual, formativa, personal, interpersonal y social) y trece atributos. El profesionalismo es un constructo complejo, por lo que se hace necesario obtener una definición común que guíe la incorporación de sus dimensiones y atributos en los procesos educacionales de las instituciones formadoras de cirujanos dentistas, de tal manera que ellos/ ellas puedan cumplir su rol social desde la excelencia contribuyendo a mejorar la calidad de atención en salud.

Purpose Inclusion of proper educational content with respect to professional ethics in dental curricula is an important step to achieve objectives of ethics education especially in postgraduate programs when the time and opportunities for explicit instruction of ethics are limited. This study aimed to find and discuss the topics of ethics and professionalism for dental postgraduate programs. Methods A modified Delphi survey of experts’ opinions with three rounds was conducted to establish a consensus on the need to teach professional ethics topics. The topics were identified through a literature review and according to the opinion of the experts. Items scored as highly important by over 80% of the participants in each round of the survey were considered educational needs. Results A total of 154 ethical issues were identified and classified into 29 topical categories to design the initial questionnaire. A consensus was developed on 24 ethics and professionalism topics for inclusion in the professional ethics curriculum for all dental postgraduate programs. Conclusions Based on the results of this study, the same educational content in professional ethics is needed for all dental residency programs in all specialties. Most of the topics on which experts reached a consensus to be included in the ethics educational content were related to ethical and professional standards of conduct.

Ethical Challenges Faced by Senior Dental Students and General Dentists

Background and Aim: General familiarity with medical ethics sometimes does not meet the needs of dentists. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ethical challenges faced by senior dental students and dentists. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 50 senior dental students and 50 dentists were selected from Yazd city, Iran. A questionnaire with three domains (demographic information, hypothetical scenarios, and some three-choice questions about ethical issues) was used to collect data, and the data were analyzed by the Chi-square test. Results:The mean age of students and general dentists was 24±2 and 30±2 years, respectively; 42% of the respondents were males, and 58% were females. Except for one item (dentist's right to refuse treatment) (P<0.05), no significant difference was found between the two groups (P>0.05). The most common challenges faced by the participants were compromising treatment due to cost issues (77.1% of students and 71.4% of dentists) and noticing sub-standard treatments performed by other dentists (64% of students and 58% of dentists). Unawareness about the right way to criticize other dentists was the least commonly reported challenge (28% of students and 36.7% of dentists). A significant difference was found in the frequency of encountering sub-standard treatments performed by other dentists between the two groups (P=0.031). A significant difference in the frequency of a particular challenge between males and females was seen only in one item (disagreement with other colleagues on the appropriate treatment plan) and only in the students' group (P= 0.040). Conclusion:This study showed that dental practitioners had faced a variety of ethical challenges, that need to be addressed in dental education. However, the results of this study may not be generalizable to other cities.
